So I have a flight to HKG (then PEK) on Sunday - currently sat in 12E (a very popular seat it seems) and I am thinking to myself it's only 25K points to upgrade to F...

Flight loading is fairly ligt Ithink so an OpUp is very unlikely:

F4 A4 J9 C9 D9 I7 W1 R0 T0 Z0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9 G0 X8 E0

There are certainly a few seats free in F.

Premium whY is pretty full though so there is a slim chance of some people being pushed into J but with I7 I find it very unlikely that they would need to push anyone up to F.

So do I pull the pin on 25K points? It has been a long time since my last F flight (QF 744 LAX-SYD after ATL-MIA-JFK-LAX so I was a little too tired to fully enjoy it). I havent flown in F on the A380 so might be nice to try. It leaves a small hole in my balance but for next year's trip I think I am more likely to be 100K points behind rather than 25K...

Decisions, decisions...

Someone has a quote in their sig about regretting what you didn't do! I would fork out and try for the upgrade. Even if you think afterwards it wasn't worth it (I think it is BTW) at least you won't die wondering. And if it does not come through, nothing lost.

Besides, there is a queue of people looking to occupy 12E! :)

Strangely 12F is showing as empty of EF... Maybe I am the highest status pax in J...

For me, it all depends on what else I would plan to use those 25K points for. If you expect long-haul Y travel in future, the perhaps save the points to upgrade into J rather than from J to F. but if the points don't have a more attractive plan, then go for it.

I never expect long haul whY in the future... that just sent a shiver down my spine...

Interestingly 12E is now showing as blocked on EF rather than free or occupied given I am now in 4F (trying to move to 4A).

Just called QF Platinum and 4A now allocated.

Well done, you won't regret it.

I went through a similar dilemma yesterday. I'm also in 12E on QF2 and QF10. I opted to keep the points to go to a JASA in April next year. Feeling rather sad because there was plenty of availability in F. :(

An off-the-topic question: if you got the upgrade using points, do you also get SCs for F, or do you only get SCs for J (your original booking)? I think I read somewhere that the latter is the case.

If you booked J and use points to upgrade to F you'll get points and SC's for J.

Excellent choice... and I think 25k for the upgrade is a bargain!

Nice work.. Agreed 25K is not that much in the scheme of things.. for the top shelf product.. hard & soft... TR please.. just to make us a bit jealous

It's been a while since the last TR so might dust of the old moleskin book and make a few notes...
