Toilet to pax ratio

Flew premium economy from Syd-Hkg yesterday on a QF 747....there was only 1 toilet for 40 passengers (full cabin)!!!; any PE passenger that tried to use the J cabin toilet 5 feet away from this toilet was chased back but I could see the J pax using the PE toilet when it was free without any comment from the FAs. Ridiculous on both accounts!!

This topic is being discussed in the 'Qantas why is it that...' thread.

QF have removed a lot of WCs from the A380 and now have some of the worst pax:loos ratios. This is no betee. On the B787 where there is 1 J loo and 2 loos shared between J and PE... And the lucky pax get to pay aa premium fare for this game changing flight. The teend to sharing loos across cabins is unacceptable: one of the reasons people pay for a premium cabin is to get access to a loo that is not shared with larger numbers of pax

FAs tell me that the decrease in loos and increase in waiting times is major complaint from pax. Also the slim line loos are so small that many find it hard to turn aound in them.

FAs have told me that they do use a curtain on the A330 to let pax change which is also much more hygeinic that the narrow loos.

There are no legal requirements for people/loo but I would have thought that there is an argument to be made using either the requirements for the workplace or those for restaurants, bars and cafes.

PE passengers do not have access to J cabin, but J passengers have access to the PE cabin.

Really? So J passengers who have their own toilets can use the one and only PE toilet at their whim?! Ridiculous!!

You can't stop them from entering the cabin so yes? If friends/family are split J/Y those in J can go back but not vice versa. There's no rule saying J has no access to Y toilets.

If the PE toilet is full and you're about to explode go use a Y one.

Based on my observations (seated 2 rows from said toilet), the Q for the PE toilet passenger sometimes was because a J pax was using it....and that is the point I'm making....and J pax from upstairs were also coming down to use the PE toilet....a J pax also tried to jump the Q for the PE toilet and rightly was yelled at by the PE pax :) Didn't affect me as I just sat in my seat til the toilet was vacant.

I've been in J and waiting for the J toilet. I was directed by the crew to use the PE one (which was empty). Remember to follow crew instructions at all times. Not doing so can land you in trouble

I also find the number of toilets on a QF A388 to be unacceptable. Long wait times, and tiny toilets. I pity the JohnKs of the world.

After doing a round trip to DFW in J on the A388 with QF i can confirm the toilet to pax ratio is bad. Its funny sitting in the forward J section and seeing how many people go to the very front where the lounge and snack bar area is looking for the toilet. They walk in and a few seconds walk out looking lost. As there is a toilet light at the front most people mistake that to mean there is a toilet there.

After meal and before landing still have large queues. Most of the J cabin need to change back out of the pj's in addition to the Y+ and pax just wanting to go before we land. Seeing there was a green light i basically ran to the loos this morning to ensure i could get there before someone else did.
Still unsure of the etiquette either. Does one stand in the middle between the loos to queue for the next spot or does each loo have its own queue.
If the toilet to pax ratio wasnt as bad this wouldnt even be an issue.

Unfortunately for QF this is a classic case of the 'small' things that many of us tend to remember about our travel, holidays or business trips.

Aircraft toilets are claustrophobic. And flithy. Try to avoid them as much as possible.

On the refurbished 474s the removal of one of the toilets for J meant long queues and the FAs did say that they had tried to have some input into the refurb design but were not listened to.

A very generous opinion John.

I'm 6'3" and find it near impossible at times....then add a little turbulence

Also what pains me is when I see parents go, then only to come back with a filled water bottle..... to then pass to their children

I had this last week.... turbulence, bathroom, with an infant who cried throughout the 7 hour flight with midnight departure... and first time traveling without mummy.

I thought the water in the toilets was labelled as non-potable? Or perhaps I just imagined it.

Qantas lavatory tap water is potable and there is no sign indicicating that it cannot be consumed.
