Actually, the word should be Lavatory according to HM QEII

Certainly in Britain and elsewhere up until the 60s and 70s both working people and the aristocracy said lavatory for the room itself. My mother always said the device itself should be called a W.C.


Toilet was regarded as a middle class euphemism its original meaning deriving from cleaning and dressing.


Like all euphemisms as soon as it gets established for its new purpose people will think it is crude and we seek out a new one.


The most silly, I find is the trend to say bathroom for a room with no bath.

If you want the seat down there's a chance I will pee on the seat as I am getting older.

I am not going to pee sitting down and I am not touching the seat with my hands. If the cover is closed I don't bother as I can't stand surprises.

...leave cover up, flush, then check completeness of flush then leave cover up so the next person do not have to lift cover up and find surprises...

Should also be signs that say squatting with shoes on seat is a no no!! And to encourage hand washing.

The bigger question is what damage we might cause to the majority for a very very very small minority. What does this do to potential rape or child sexual assault? Are all the proponents going to wipe their hands clean when a child commits suicide because they were molested in a situation caused by this? Is it going to be justified by saying that is stops committing suicide (as if the toilet is the only issue)?

Why so negative? Shouldn't the bigger question be what can we collectively do differently for the good of everyone? If toilets are a place where rape or assault happen (most rapes and assaults happen in the home anyway, but I digress) then it doesn't matter what gender is raping what gender, but that it can happen in a public place. Maybe we need to think about our social and community engineering more critically and make toilets safer spaces for everyone.

In those days it was leave seat down AND LID.

It kept the flies/odours in (or out depending).

I think we're in furious agreement. The people I know in same sex relationships don't want to get married in a church. They just want to get married.

In every single country that has introduced the oxymoronic concept of same sex "marriage", this has been followed by fascist attacks on those who do not wish to be involved and those with contrary religious beliefs (except where those beliefs are based on the Koran - funny that).

As many of the SSM proponents publicly admit, the real aim of SSM is not the rhetorical objective of equality but to irreversibly destroy the family unit so that nothing stands in the way of complete government control of people's lives. Remove the family so that people have no choice but to depend on the government. That is the spooky fascist agenda at play here.

No one said men should be using the same loo as a young girl. A transgender person who was born male but is mentally female is a woman, known as MtF (male to female) transsexualism.

Well you know there are parents posting here. I suggested unisex toilets would solve the gender identity issue coupled with family toilets for those with young children.

I have never heard what you claim the SSM proponents to have admitted. And I have dealings with 'many' such groups, professionally and socially.

Just as some background for those that think that transsexualism is a choice, its not. I spent three years working with TS people and all our work points to a difference in brain chemistry. ie those that identify as females have brains more similar to XX females. Imagine what it must be like to have a female brain, but be stuck in a male body. Or vice versa.

They are entitled to an opinion and voice their opinion if a little different from others.

They are right in one respect though. Some religions have been around for thousands of years. The religion doesn't need to adapt to accept what is seen by some as acceptable today yet that has been an agenda of many for a long time. This includes the notion that religion owns "marriage".

Don't like it? Create a new religion. It is that simple.

News - it already happens. I am sure that people who were born with male parts (and still have them), but identify as, look like and act like women already use female toilets. Probably the only people who would be any the wiser would be perverts who have somehow found a way to spy on people inside cubicles. And I don't think I can recall someone looking and acting like a woman use a male toilet in regular public places (i.e excluding nightclubs and gay bars). All this does is probably legitimise the act, and is probably more important for institutions and the like (schools, workplaces etc) where people may know the original gender of the person who is trying to live their life as a girl or woman (or vice versa as a man).

Personally, I'd be more concerned about men being there alongside 6 year old boys in mens toilets, than transgender people that dress, act and look like women being there along 6 year old girls in womens toilets.

The main argument I can see from a protecting children perspective, is perverts/paedophile men (who do not identify as women) dressing up as/masquerading as women and going to womens toilets with harmful intent. But nothing stopping them doing that now.
