TomCat's new digs!

House opposite had their slab poured this morning. Tradies started before 6am

Check out the backyard (or lack thereof).

We have four houses being built in our tiny narrow street. Concrete pours started well before sunrise. With floodlights. And worse, multiple trucks waited outside our house with their thingies rotating as they waited their turn to pour.

When your little one arrives try to get them used to noise by not being super quiet when they are sleeping.

I’m surprised they don’t have to have more green space. Our house only occupies 50% of our block...
Given all the other issues that housing must have to be considered environmentally appropriate having a garden is one of the best ways of natural climate assistance. We maintain our front verge, it’s the only green one in the street. Except today at last we have actually had rain!

Glad for the rain here today, one less lot of watering for the new front lawn.
Will be happy when our fruit trees get a but bigger and provide some coverage.

A house on the corner of our street was demolished a few weeks back and I wondered if there was going to be an even bigger house put in its place. But no! The land is to be subdivided! Oh no I thought. Another small block increasing the housing density. Thenfor sale sign went up yesterday advertising the first block for sale and also giving the square metre measurement. 1100 sq metres. So actually larger than my block. Maybe not such a big deal after all. Now to,see what the land sells for.

Why doesn’t anyone build with eaves!? It is the cheapest and easiest energy efficient design and I think looks so much better too. We have a nice 900mm eave on our North and West side providing great protection from the summer sun along a 10m full height section of glazing and then letting a heap in during winter.

It looks like the same for every house in that picture, isn't it? At least the ones either side.
The one to the left is deceptive, they have enough space for a golden retriever.

Because they cost extra, and most new home builders can’t afford it. For us they were a priority, plus it looks better.

And the same could be said for verandahs. But there’s no longer the space. McMansion over the road which cost almost 2 million to build had very expensive extra layered tempered glass costing around $20,000 each and the morning sun strikes it and produces glare across the road. An eave would have helped that significantly but even though they had plenty of space they built a house that everyone in this area (Tudor style) loathes.

They could afford it. Just build a slightly smaller house. It’s just priorities at the end of the day. It’ll actually cost them more in the long run on wear on AC units having to work harder and longer.

Out of interest, on a project home what is the ‘upgrade’ cost for eaves?

Ive been eagerly watching a knock down rebuild up the road from us, looks like owner builder. Old house, old block which means at least 600sqmtrs and Im surprised by how much room they have left on both sides of the property, one side is at least 5mtrs and the other about 3mtrs.

I guess with new home developments, because they have dedicated park and green space, the argument is you dont need a yard because there is a park down the road. I think BC wont ever regret having their own private oasis and not having to toddle down the road to share a bit of garden with 100+ other people.

Having the space was fabulous when around 45 people invaded our house on Sunday. Kids ran around outside, kicked a football, plenty of room for adults to spread out while eating and drinking. Just cant beat that.

I agree. My 25 y.o. house has no sun on the glass in the afternoon mid summer. None. All because of eaves. And they cost nothing to run.

Did you have to go and comb the grass to put it back into order after those kids went wild?

Sounds like you put on a great show. Hope you got some nice baby stuff. What do people give for baby showers these days?

Nope, our grass is super tough.
Lots of nappies apparentlyo_O bibs, wraps, onesies, baby wipes etc. Plus cute toys and champagne:D

Trying to wrangle trades this morning. My 8am curtain install got changed to 9, now they're saying 10-11 but I have other appointments to get to  bub getting extra checks today as there was some concerns about it's reduced movement yesterday (everything ok though).

I hate intensely, waiting for tradies. Stuck in the middle. You want the job done but you can’t just sit around, waiting. Good luck. Sounds like you’ll get some sugar to drink. Tried coke? The liquid variety that is.

Today is just a scan to double check everything, particularly fluid levels. They did monitoring yesterday and got a good heart rate and movement. Tried cold drinks etc yesterday which did nothing.
