Barcelona really does sound terrible from this thread. Never been, never been overly keen. Now not at all.
Not my favorite place in the world but would definitely go back (outside of peak summer). Had a great few days there in August last year before heading to Nottingham for the Ashes (which shan't be mentioned again..).

Barcelona is definitely worth seeing, if only for the unique Gaudi architecture and an amble down La Rambla - you just don't get experiences like that elsewhere. I didn't find the much-hyped tapas bars anything special and, as anat0l said, there's limited things to actually do there (as opposed to sightseeing). Would I go again? Probably not, but that is speaking with the benefit of having already seen it. I would still recommend any of my friends to go and have a look for themselves.

The downside is that it's a city where you have to be especially vigilant all the time and modify your behaviour accordingly. You need to be "street wise".

Don't let the stories put you off Bart.

Barcelona is certianly worth a visit, I think. Whilst, its not my favourite Spanish city, I prefer Madrid or Sevilla, it does have some good qualities. You just need to be aware and alert. Not alarmed. Wander down Ramblas and through Barrio Gotic, but I'd do earlier in the day.

love Barcelona. Try a Fat Tire tour - pushbike around the city - and of course the hop on, hop off buses.

Yeah it is definitely worth a look if you haven't been. Gaudi architecture is cool. La Sagrada is kind of interesting, and Park Guell is very nice. It has some other cool sights and Montserrat is worth a day trip.
But yes having been there once I have zero desire to return. There are so many better places in Europe I think.
