After years of not being able to use the travel credits to their full potential, Amex have finally listened. It now appears you can use your travel credit for Fine Hotels and Resort bookings.

When booking, you can now choose to pre pay and use your travel credit and/or points to book. Good to see a positive change to slightly offset the recent downgrades to the Platinum Charge card.

That is great news! This was always a reason as to why I would hesitate to book through FHR if I had travel credit to use.

Anyone know what the situation is if you cancel a booking where the travel credit is used towards payment? Ie, what happens to the travel credit? Refunded too? Expiry date 12 months from the cancellation date?

Looks like it's forfeited but I've never tried personally. Wonder if it's possible to re-schedule the booking rather than cancelling.

That's the official policy, but since covid there are stories that Amex will re-credit the travel credit with a new 12 month expiry if you cancel a refundable booking.

I'm glad they've added this option, though I wonder if it'll change the earning of points/credits in the hotel's loyalty program if you book this way.

I was able to get refunded for FS Sydney over New Years, after the Northern beaches outbreak. This wasn't a FHR booking though and was non-refundable after 29 November but due to Covid restrictions, Amex rep gave a full refund including re-credited travel credit.

now that this is possible, looking at the shangrila in Sydney, however can't seem to find a cancellation policy?
i guess 1) if lockdown etc or 2) one of us is sick we would need to cancel

The cancellation policy is visible when you click the "show details" button for a specific room then down the bottom click "show policies"

This is what shows for a check-in date on the 24/8/21 for one night. I read that to be cancel 24 hours prior and you get your money back. What is unclear is what happens to the travel credit.

Thanks, will give that a shot.
Even if they are willing to reschedule I'd be happy

When I tried a dummy booking I noticed it only showed one of three valid TCs. Perhaps a phone call is required while the website has teething issues. If anyone does call, would be good to get some clarification on the cancellation policy in relation to the TC component.

You can only use one travel credit per booking unfortunately.

Looks like I will have to call. no option for using TC, thoug the pop-up says I can use TC, points or points+pay
will check about the cancellation & TC

So I rang today, TC will be reinstated if the hotel is willing to give a full in refund she said.

So in my case Shangrila is offering a 24hr cancellation period so if I cancelled before that, I would get my TC back.

On why I couldn't use TC for my particular booking.. there is a promo where the 3rd night is given back as a 100% statement credit. so if I could use a TC, it would be double dipping

That's a great outcome on the TC refund.

As for why you couldn't use your TC, how is that double dipping? You're using a credit for part payment. The fact the third night is refunded shouldn't be relevant. Almost like saying you can't use the TC because you get a $100 USD property credit.

to be honest the call centre had no idea
there is a small question mark pop up that says "only one travel credit can be redeemed per booking" where the travel credit section on the webpage is supposed to be
