Some quick questions/comments:

1. Tomorrow, Monday, August 6 is a public (bank holiday) in Sydney:
=> Will the train stations have ticket staff available?
=> If not, I assume I can buy a ticket as mentioned in #2 via the ticket machine?

2. The cost from St. James to the Airport is $27.40 during peak.

3. Then, there is another charge for the gate pass of $19.00, which according to the link below
should be be included in #2, is this correct?

4. So the total cost to get from Hyde Park/St. James to INTL Airport is $27.40, right?

5. Is it possible to purchase these tickets in advance(?) (I assume not) but was just curious.

6. Any other options/recommendations?

Yes you will be able to purchase tickets as long as you are departing from a major train station like Hyde Park. I cannot confirm cost but if you are travelling by your self and you are travelling light then train or even bus is an option. If you are travelling with someone 2 x train tickets (using you estimates) I would catch a cab which would be around $50. Anyway the link below is a train timetable for sydney / airport that may be useful.

Tomorrow is not a public holiday (banks only) everything else operates as normal including public transport.

Cost of ticket is $15.40pp

It may well be a "Bank holiday" but it is certainly NOT a public holiday in Sydney - therefore all services and the associated mass of humanity who use them will be in operation on 6 August 2012

An adult single from St James to International (inclusive of the Station Access Fee) is $16.20; an adult return is $27.40. Unless your return journey is on the same day as the first journey, do not buy a return ticket. (I don't know if you intend to travel to the Airport to fly overseas yourself, or whether you are seeing somebody off! If you are travelling overseas yourself, you need only buy a single ticket, as you presumably will not be using the return journey on the same day!)

Aside from some missing bankers and financial workers, Sydney's public transport will be as normal on Monday. It is not a genral public holiday, so the trains will run to an ordinary weekday timetable.

Other options with not much walking (to save money)....

St. James -> Mascot station ($3.40 single peak -- no surcharge at this station any more)
Walk 100m down Bourke St towards the airport, crossing Coward St.
Catch 400 bus to Intl terminal (need to pre-buy some MyBus2 cards (I think $2.80 each).

Also possible with slightly less walking via Rockdale but you are going further than you need to and from St.james need to change trains,

Just to clarify - not just Banks but [some] other financial institutions - for example NRMA insurance gets the day (and so do NRMA roadside assistance as they previously owned the insurance business)
