at the normal baggage claim area?
and thank you for the reply :)

they did mention having more than 900 AUD (or the equivalent) in "goods" but also an exception if you have owned it more than 1 year, so my glasses (like 300) phone (iphone 5 64gb which will be unlocked...hard to price 300-600) and other "personal items" wont count against that. I will likely have food with me though, guessing that won't pass without review (and may not pass at all....request of a friend, was told it MUST be declared "or pay the price").

In Australia, the domestic and international terminals are separated. When you arrive in Sydney, you will arrive at the international terminal. You then clear immigration with everyone else arriving on international flights, then collect your bags at the "normal" carousel baggage claim area, yes. All the international flights share the terminal. Hence why you need to then transfer by bus to the domestic terminal for your flight to BNE.

As far as I'm aware, you don't need to declare items which are for personal use, only if you are bringing excessive amounts of gifts or items you are planning on selling. You have to declare some foods, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, organic products etc. Wrapped lollies and things like that are fine. If unsure, it's better just to tick yes.

New request, does anyone know a way to get from The Rocks to Taronga Zoo, without the ferry, as it seems it will be closed for 6 months starting in march. (taxi seems too costly where bus is slow, hoping there is a better way)

Where did you read that the ferry will be closed for six months?

That's just one wharf on the route which will be closed, and the notice states that the ferry will continue to operate the existing timetable at other wharves on the route. You won't be going via Mosman anyway; Taronga Zoo is the first stop after Circular Quay on the way there and the last stop on the way back.

it said it would affect both, but having said that I didn't read carefully enough, it was 2014 so work should be done now anyway, thought it was 2015

No it says it will affect the route, not the Taronga Zoo wharf. You won't be going anywhere near the Mosman wharf in any case.

The ferry is the best way for a tourist staying in the city or The Rocks to get to the zoo. It gets you out on the harbour for next to no cost and is an experience not to be missed. It's only a short 20-minute ride so don't bother grabbing a seat inside. Get out on the decks of the ferry and soak it up. :)

Agree with everything here. Taronga has its own wharf, so while the overall normal route for that ferry might be affected, access to the zoo would still be fine. And yes, just get out on the Harbour. No need to do fancy schmancy expensive tourist cruises. Just get yourself on a ferry, any ferry, and sit outside.

I used to live on the north shore and caught the ferry to work in the city regularly from Neutral Bay. I sat outside in all weathers. It's the only thing I miss about living in that part of Sydney.

I realize I am bumping an old thread, but I wondered if anyone could think of any high adrenaline (skydiving is OUT) or exciting sight, or restaurant, or anything else that must be seen or done, in (or around) Brisbane. I can't (and likely wouldn't want to) skydive, I'm too big, but the viator choice of 10 min chopper ride after 55min of high speed boating Jet Boat Extreme - Gold Coast Tours | Viator.com. seems interesting. I have 16 days in Ipswich, only 2 of which are mostly planned, my god son's birhtday, and my friend's wedding.

edit
planned is a "strong" word but I wouldn't want to do ANYTHING else those two days

Gold Coast will be more exciting than BNE, they have 4 theme parks like Disney/Universal but a bit smaller, they have rollercoasters and waterslides etc.
Also things like bungy jumps, slingshots, water sports, go karts, jet skis, surfing, nightclubbing.

only little more than an hour away, that would work absolutely, if you have any ideas on what may be seen there (besides a jetboat/helicopter).

My advice would be to spend as little time as possible in Ipswich :p both Sunshine and Gold coasts are a good option

Hell yes. Anything but Ipswitch! Whenever my partner and I are in BNE for family stuff, we simply escape to a nice city hotel. The Hilton is our choice, but YMMV. We like it for the very comfy beds, air conditioning, coughtails, laid back but good service and nearby restaurants. It's our little oasis.

Staying with a friend at their house, but I will have mobility to get where I need

I would suggest paragliding. Best fun you can have without a motor. The rush from the lift while in a thermal is as good as any when climbing out.

addon questions, cultural differences, any I should know about, been reading online, the big ones I have found so far:
taking the piss
no tipping except for excellent service
"While an Australian may say, 'G'day' or 'G'day, mate', this may sound patronizing from a foreigner."
Respect for equality
No eating drinking or smoking on public transports
Sit up front with taxi driver (what if there are two people to be driven?)
