Travel plans 2024

Then in June it is a few days in Darwin before flying to Japan again to spend a month in Hokkaido. A few days in Sapporo before a week by train around southern Hokkaido ending in Asahikawa. After a couple of days there hire a car and spend 2 weeks driving to the south east coast,up the east coast and then to the northern tip of Hokkaido before driving down the west coast and back to Asahikawa. then fly home. This trip will use up all my expiring KF points I hope.

Hi @drron and @mrs.dr.ron ... when are you planning to be in Sapporo? I've just decided to go to Hokkaido before the AFF lounge crawl in HKG organised by @Matt_01 , so the week of 3 June more-or-less. That was only thought of last night, so no plans yet, but thinking of hiring a car and checking out some volcanos and onsen SE of Sapporo.

We won't be in Sapporo until July 1st. Spending a few days in DRW before heading off to Hokkaido via SIN. Going to spend 3 nights in Tokyo looking at hydrangeas before flying on to Sapporo.

I think another road trip to Denver from LA, I always like to take different routes in the south west.

Looking to get back to the US and So. Cal, trip up to SFO possibly.
Looking at W/J class fares from AKL , atm makes alot of sense to do the trip ex AKL, with a cheap positioning flight tacked on at the start/end.

Care to share some of your fav spots? I’ve done SLC to Moab to Zion to LAS, but currently planing a Mt Rushmore to LA trip

Did you do the side trip to Bryce Canyon - well worth it

So to slightly hijack the thread, I’m after some suggestions for travel plans for 2024.

Mr Seat 0A and I got married in 1984 and so did both his sisters. We are all still married to the originals and just now decided to do something together to celebrate 120 years! Specifically we are looking for something memorable to do together. Some general guidelines for suggestions:
  • Not tropical
  • Not super luxury
  • Not hard core adventure/hiking, but something active for pretty fit oldies (64-74 in ages) would be good, two of who have previous episodes of HAPE, so probably not altitude treking
Current thinking is maybe a cruise seeking northern lights, a European river cruise in the former Eastern bloc, Iceland, somewhere a bit off the beaten track maybe…

Would really welcome suggestions of things to do. If this is too much of a hijack of thread, could mods please split it off to new one? Or just tell me to do it myself and I will ❤️. TIA.

2024 plans are a repeat of this year and most years. 8 trips to USA again, varying from 3 to 6 weeks. Europe again for a few weeks. Instead of Bali, probably go back to Hawaii or maybe somewhere new for anniversary. Have only been to NZ once since Rona, usually went twice a year and miss those trips, so at least one trip over in 2024.

If you haven’t done before, Iceland is a must. I would love a second visit. It’s adventurous and you will be satisfied no matter how physically invested you want to be.

What a lovely plan and positive story.
Also completely relevant to this thread - it is 2024 travel.
Could try the islands off Sicily - Lipari has incredible history dating back thousands of years and they are still uncovering things…. plenty of nice hills/interesting landscapes / walking/good food and not yet overrun by tourists like the Greek Isles. I remember when we went last year people were carry TVs onto the ferry they purchased from Mainland!!
I have not been to Iceland yet so would add that too but only due to it being on my list of future trips.
What time of year are you looking at?

I think anything Cruise in the NH would be fabulous and really you can't go wrong with where you go. Maybe look at everyone's interests and come up with a common theme. Maybe Rhine River - Amsterdan to Basel, (then spend time in Switzerland at end) or Amsterdam to Budapest, or a Cruise though France wine regions, Douro cruise for Portugal, or Amsterdam to Prague. People who want to, seem to average around 15-20000 steps a day so not idle meandering. The ocean - if anyone is prone to sea sickness then that might be limiting for northern seas areas. Try avoid late July - August because of low water levels and heat in river cruises. Haven't been to Iceland but everyone raves. And there's a cruise option for a circumnavigation as well.

Here's my 'special' suggestion - cruise round Galapagos Islands. Yes, on the equator, but not 'tropical' as in beaches and sun focussed (and there are penguins!). Lots of on-shore walks, hut nothing too strenuous; choose your luxury level.

Smaller boats tend to be more expensive and more 'luxurious'. But the size of shore parties is strictly limited by the authorities, so even if you go on a larger vessel, you still wont be in a big group ashore.

Usually 7-10 days if memory serves, but I did mine in 2015 so I guess many things may have changed.

My TR from here.

If any interest in the Galapagos, get researching and enquiring straight away.

Congratulations

We are thinking maybe September, October or November. Sicily has been recommended by a friend - but one SIL has already been there. Not a reason not to go again though.

9 years ago we did a repositioning cruise with RCCL from Copenhagen to NYC via Bergen, Faro Islands, Iceland, Halifax NS and onto NYC. It was a fantastic trip with an overnight in Reykjavik which allowed time to see quite a lot via a small group private tour organised through CC with 12 others. Halifax was beautiful and its history with the Titanic fascinating. Our second choice was HAL that included Greenland but more expensive and navigating entry into Qaqortoq at that time of the year was hit and miss so we went the cheaper option. A quick search shows plenty options that include both Iceland and Greenland across multiple cruise lines.

Definitely want to return to Iceland, it’s amazing.
