Tumi and lightweight luggage

Sorry to thread necro, but just wanted to follow up some thoughts on optimal / lightweight cabin luggage -

When we were in SF, we spent a fair bit of time in the Tumi store, where this caught my eye:

TUMI > Lightweight International Carry-On > Alpha

However, to shave off some weight it omits a few features from the regular 20 inch rollaboard:

TUMI > International 20 Zippered Expandable Carry On > Alpha

Of course, I've found some great deals on the Victorinox WT 20, NXT 20 and Tourbach 20, substantially cheaper than the Tumis, which also give me pause:

Victorinox Swiss Army - TravelGear - WT-20
Victorinox Swiss Army - TravelGear - Mobilizer® 20
Victorinox Swiss Army - TravelGear - Tourbach? 20

Anyone have any experience with any of the above? I'm after something light but which provides packing flexibility (when not checking bags). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. :)

I can't seem to work out which lightweight one you are referring to as the links take you to the Tumi home page...

The Tumi Lightweight International Carry-on Alpha has a combined linear measurement of 108cm (52.5cm x 34.5cm x 21cm (HxWxD)) which is over the carry-on baggage for both QF and DJ. I'm pretty sure that it would fail the sizer.
It certainly fails DJ's maximums: 1 piece not exceeding dimensions of 23 cm in depth, 34 cm in height and 48 cm in length, (total linear dimensions equal to 105cm).
Finally it claims to be lightweight but the website gives no actual weight!!

I agree about the weight issue - very frustrating that they don't mention it exactly. I did try it out in SF though and it is pretty light in comparison to their other bags.

However, according to Qantas' carry on size limitations (Fly - Baggage - Carry-on Baggage - General), it should be fine - they allow one bag up to 115cm:

Australian Domestic

All Classes:

2 x 105cm (41in) bags or
1 x 105cm (41in) bag plus 1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid garment bag or
1 x 115cm (45in) bag
7kg (15lb) per piece

All Dash 8 and Fokker aircraft
1 x 105cm (41in) bag 4kg (9lb) total

All International (country specific exceptions apply)*

First/Business/Premium Economy:

2 x 115cm (45in) bags or
1 x 115cm (45in) bag plus 1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid garment bag

Economy:

1 x 115cm (45in) bag or
1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid garment bag
7kg (15lb) per piece
Obviously Dash 8s and Fokkers are out, but everything else should be fine. Not really concerned about DJ as I doubt I'll be flying them for some time, and can improvise if I'm forced to. But as you noted, the main issue is the weight.

Simon, I sometimes have issues with the Tumi site too, I think they have some kind of IP geoblocking going on - very strange. Try these:

Alpha lightweight - Tumi Alpha Lightweight International Carry On - Model: 22902-RH
Alpha international 20" - Tumi Alpha 20" International Zippered Expandable Carry-On - Model: 22020DH

I have the 20in and can't fault it. I am not sure how much lighter the lighter version would be. I don't use the shirt/suit carrier insert or the hanger though...

What did you do with shirts/suit jackets on your SOB trip Simon?

To be honest, I'm not sure how much I'd use them either, but the fact that they are available on the Victorinox Tourbach and Tumi 20 do seem to be advantages that may be worth paying more for. If they're not that useful, then I guess it comes back down to the WT / NXT / Lightweight.

I like the handle of the WT, but it does seem to be lacking pockets on the top side, as does the Lightweight. The NXT seems pretty well rounded, and although the Tourbach and Tumi 20 seem to be pretty loaded, I'd worry about the weight.

On SOB I used a suit bag and the rollaboard. As I was travelling in J/F there was no issue with hand luggage.

I actually have the tri-fold suitbag which folds up a little smaller than a regular suitbag.

Thanks Simon.

Anyone have any opinions on the Victorinox rollaboards linked above?

Probably going to order tonight, so would welcome any shared experiences - at this stage its down to a Victorinox or the Tumi lightweight as I can't quite justify getting the Tumi 20...
