Turkish Airlines Application Grounded Before Launch

I suspect that it's the fifth freedom rights specifically that are the issue. It could be Singpore, Australia or both that are delaying on granting those.

Your slander against QF is uncalled for, the AFR article even states QF does not object - and why would they. A two stop service to Europe is not much competition.

How do we know QF hasn't quietly lobbied (without putting in a formal objection) against TK?

QF naturally wants to have as little competition as possible.

Do you understand how companies often have a quiet word in Ministers' ears?

Read Joe Aston in the 'AFR' today about the separate QR matter.

Australia… pig sty of coercive and corrupt political pocket lining.

Yep, we're the first to condemn Asian countries (and probably South American/African, but less of a focus) for 'being corrupt', 'being handed brown paper bags' and so on. Many among us perceive we're lily white, with no sin.

But we have corruption aplenty: it just takes a different form.

A quick word over a delicious upmarket Peking duck lunch or dinner works wonders!

This is the travel news thread. You're completely making up this conspiracy.

I think there is a lot more to it than that. Ie safety record.

Yes, they can ban individual airlines as well, but the vast majority on the banned list are because their national aeronautical certifier isn't trusted. That is the case for Nepal, amongst others.

Not saying there aren't other Nepali airlines that absolutely deserve to be banned in their own right (eg Tara Air) but from what I understand foreign audits of Nepal Airlines suggest it's got a good safety culture & systems. In any case, that's what the Australian Foreign AOC process is for.

I wish TK would use CGK or KUL instead of SIN. Someplace that QF isn’t so competitive on.
Actually Kul would suit me fine but I suspect MH might be less pleased!

I’ve slept in their airport.
Twice. ☺️

Ok, more info for context, and as I’ve thought about it I’ve actually slept within IST (ie: airside) four times.

- Twice referred to above were both in the TK M&S lounge due to longer transits but sleeping facilities not available / not eligible.
- Once in the TK M&S lounge nap rooms due to arriving off long haul and meeting the connecting time restrictions.
- Once in the Yotel airside, which whilst expensive, was only slightly more expensive than paying for three visas to make use of the free TK transit hotel. However it had the great advantage of taking 5 minutes to walk to and check in versus the bus transfers to/from the free hotel, which would have eaten into a large part of the sleep time of the 10 hour transit!

Back on topic: even if TK do end up flying to MEL & SYD, I’ll probably still be taking someone else to MNL, BKK, KUL, SIN or CGK and catching TK flights out of there to save ~$2-3K per person.

Reading between the lines, it is clear that the Labor Govt is doing everything it can to block Turkish and protect Qantas (in return for continued access to the QF CL).

"... under current bilateral arrangements, subject to meeting safety, security and licensing requirements”. “These critical regulatory processes will take many months to complete before services could commence to Australia,” she added.

Whilst apparently explaining the reason for the Turkish roadblock (and you'll forgive me if I don't necessarily take everything a Minister says at face value ;)) she still refuses to say what QR was blocked. Explanation for one, but not the other.

Could it have anything to do with Qantas not opposing Turkish but not opposing QR? 🤔

Rubbish.

Current bilateral relationship allows for a daily service (the review is to get the second daily service to SYD).

The CASA process takes 130 days according to their website, which apparently they haven't even started.

You can't block an application that doesn't exist.

You're comparing apples and grapefruits.

TK is a routine application that's within an extant treaty - an application hasn't been formally made yet. Let's wait for TK to actually submit it before accusing the government of blocking it.

QR requires a renegotiation of the treaty between the two governments, the status of which aren't usually made publicly available unless it's in a press release, which usually only happens when an agreement has been made. Anyway, let's keep the QR speculation in the QR thread. This one is about TK.

Actually, I'm just being mischievous. But you are taking the Minister (or her spokesperson) at their word. Good luck with that; do you believe everything that comes out of Canberra?

I trust her more than I trust the latest media reporting about both of these incidents, particularly AFR (which has then been parroted by others).

With regards to TK, AFR reported they only had rights to four services per week, I was second guessing myself as the way I read the treaty it was seven - but the minister did confirm it was seven.

If you (media) can't get basic facts like that right, I'm much less likely to go along with your speculation or unnamed "sources".
