Twice around the world in 40 days

With 25 flight sectors, I think I'd better, too. The diet is going to get paused for 5 weeks.

Last piece of planning has fallen into place with a points upgrade to J on HBA-SYD coming through last night.

My new Gold Card (status downgrade - shiver) hasn't arrived from Qantas, though. Will be relying on BPs to get lounge access - should be OK I think. Anyone know of lounges run by AA, QR, BA, JL, CX or UL who might want to see a physical card? (I know Air Canada used to .)

On our last trip AA did-wouldn't believe mrsdrron's LTG status when OWS on BP.Her gold card hadn't arrived before departure.Fortunately I had my old QP card-was going to deny that as it was old until I pointed out the lifetime bit and I was still alive.
So be prepared to show your QFF page with status.

We will be in same boat with QR and expired card. Not that they recognise status anyway. LTP dr.ron? :D

I won't 'Like' that, but thanks for the warning.

We will be at Sigiriya 6-8 May and also a bit of R & R Galle 14-16 May

So, after hopefully arranging the first AFF meet-up in Galle, Sri Lanka, its time to make the first, short flight.

Unfortunately, like most of my TRs, the first flight begun in Hobart airport and ended in Sydney and has left me crabby.

Check in was OK - no one at the Qantas business check-in, but didn't take too long and security, as usual here, was a breeze. Onto the local QP which has always been a bit sad and very crowded when there are a couple of QF/JQ flights about to depart, but my flight was at lunch time and the place was blessedly quiet. And at least there is a QP - still no Virgin lounge (no space) and nothing likely for years, if ever.

HBA1.JPG

Boarding quite a different matter. Hobart airport last saw a material re-development before Virgin came along. As soon as that happened, it was too small and has been too small ever since. Tourism in Tasmania is booming, but the airport owners - party part of the Macquarie bank group simply refuse to spend capital to upgrade what is a simply inadequate facility. They did some largely cosmetic changes to the arrivals area last year, but that had the justification of getting more space for commercial outfits like car rentals.

A much-touted 'master plan' was launched just 2 years ago and now is already so out of date that they have stopped even the tarting-up of the departures area for maybe 2-4 years while they figure out what to do  . Just hopeless.

HBA doesn't have air bridges, so its power-in and power-out from the apron, which means the planes are spread wide, and there's a limit of 5 I think. If any delays in departures, an incoming plane can't get an apron spot, so on the apron approach they sit. Up to 45 mins has been reported. Sometimes there aren't enough stair units for the planes at the gates (they are actually made in northern Tasmania). So again, if not enough stairs - some-one waits.

For the passengers, we have the delight of these cattle yard fences across the whole width of the apron, to guide the cattle up to 125 metres, in the open, to board their plane, if its at one of the ends. If a plane movement occurs during boarding, boarding stops.

Mind you, on the tarmac at least you are in the open. RH pic shows the departures area (all airlines) today. Pretty typical.

HBA2.JPG

Boarding was delayed by 15 mins while they tried to load a wheelchair pax onto the plane. We could see the chap sitting at the base of the stairs, at first. Eventually a lift operator came along, and then .. well, I'm not quite sure .. a lot of stuffing about, more people on scene, they moved the lift, more stuffing around ... what a load of freak'n amateurs.

No priority boarding; there are signs for it, and from the adjacent gate they have done it, but not apparently today. So, after they have loaded the wheelchair pax, and a scrum has formed around the gates, of we go. Oh. Scanner not turned on. "Does anyone know how to turn on the scanner?" After a delay some-one found the button to turn on the scanner.

I got a points upgrade to business. I always enjoy QF domestic business - although I only ever do to MEL or SYD, with small cabins.

Pre departure drink was still or sparkling water (hmmmm ...) but the lunch was nice. A bit lacking in presentation, but it would have already done a flight down from SYD before this one ... No sav blanc, only a chardy and a cab sav, which I had and which was OK. A nice flight.

HBA3.JPG

Then SYD. We arrived about on time, then no-one to operate the air bridge (can't win, can I?). Eventually off, then ... bags.

No priority bags, of course. Ha ha ha ha. In fact, it took 25 mins for the bags to arrive ... with not much else happening in the bag carousel area, as far as I could see. That's our pathetic knot of pax on the LH pic, views across to silent other carousels.

Sorry for the grumpy start - HBA is bad.

I have a B747 all the way to JFK tomorrow, so one last chance to ride on the old girl. 14K upper deck exit; sticking so far, cross fingers.

Hope you don't like/need fresh air… the seat does not match the air vent… :-)
(just to continue the theme…. )

So to SYD, which you'd think not be worthy of comment. Not so.

Arrive at the 'B' area where my flight was to check in, to be met with a sea of check-in kiosks. As a rule, I don't do kiosks (one saving grace for HBA is that we haven't got the kiosk plague yet), so I hunted around for business check in. None found, so with dread I approached the kiosks (I am travelling with a US visa, not an ESTA, so I knew in advance that it would reject me).

Sure enough, after playing with me for 5 mins or so, it did.

I eventually found a free roving agent, who told me there were dedicated check-in counters. Where I asked? And she pointed to the side, behind a big construction hoarding. yes, there were signed, like this:

SYD1.JPG

One small sign, jammed up against the wall. Behind me is a sea of economy check-in kiosks, queues of people doing bag drop etc. Well done Qantas, you've aced this one.

Another surprise to come. In the J queue were some uniformed contractors who apparently are employed by the US TSA to pre-interview pax bound for the US. Aussie accents, it was a pleasant enough question session - where going, why, been to US before, purpose of visit etc. they put a sticker in the pack of passport 'not to be removed until you clear customs in USA'. Is this new? Should I make a thread about it?

Edit: sticker was checked at the pre gate passport and BP check.

Through immigration, and securities, pretty free at 7:00am and I was though from the curb in 30 mins. Would have been 20 except for my kiosk excursion.

I understand the walk to the SYD INT J lounge, past the F doors is called the walk of shame. First time I've had to do it. I buried my face in a magazine lest any AFFers were about to see me.. SYD J lounge is OK. Not crowded at 7am.

SYD2.JPG

Consolation. Pancakes were offered at the coffee machine. I did say my diet was on hold for this trip, didn't I?
SYD3.JPG

Finally, champagne lovers TURN AWAY NOW. TRIGGER WARNING.

There was sparkling wine on offer. The bottles were all open, and warm to touch; no beading.

Sorry, I'll try not to do that again.

Staff at the J lounge very good - roving offering coffee etc. Not as nice experience as the F lounge of course, but it'll have to do.;) Wifi excellent ; download 80 mbps, upload 165 mbps at 7:15 am, but now, at 8am with lounge filling up, 76 mbps and 59 mbps.

Oh dear God. Went for a walk in the duty free area and asked about rates at the 'Global Exchange' desk. Flat fee of $14.70 and FX of 0.64 Aussie to the $US:eek::eek::eek:.

If I bought US$100 I'd pay A$50 more than using my Citi card when I get to the US.

Bloody outrageous, yet people were queuing. Thank goodness for AFF. If you don't think paid membership is worth it, think again.

bbbbbut they will just blow on the back of your head with the seat upright…….. :-)

I guess some folks don't mind a cold neck and thats why they haven't moved them.
They were in the right spot for the original seats

I usually find the cabin gets warm, although by the exit door is cooler, so I don't mind them there. Off most of the time, but a bit of a breeze when I'm trying to sleep :)

Meanwhile this guy had been frantically going through paperwork since we boarded, also on then phone to Maintenance, I think. I think an engineer type. Anyone recognise the epaulette?

coughpy head sets and amenity kit. Like any self respecting AFFer, I BMO NCs. The cabin attendants both sound really good.

PDB Champagne is Jacquart.

They list four champagnes, including the rather excellent Charles Heidsick NV. Only ever had Jacquart served. Is this one of those things where they list good options and always give you the cheap one?

Oops, in 1A (natch) but distracted by @RooFlyer frantically communicating from HBA & SYD to join me in some 2019 travel I'd just last week locked away... ;):).

The Deadly Duo will strike again in 2019...:eek::D.
Are you sitting on my knee as I picked 1A when the TR opened? Or have I been relegated to the back of the bus as you take your usual seat?:p:D LOL
