UFC is coming to Melbourne - scheduled for Sunday Nov 15 - what am I missing with UFC?

People call this a sport! IMHO it is nothing short of sanctioned barbarism where the sole intent of combatants is to smash the opponent into a state of unconsciousness of extreme pain where continuing is intolerable.

Is that about right? Sport? As a Victorian I am so embarrassed that my fabulous State is permitting this - I am totally ashamed of our brain dead Premier for taking this to an election as a prominent issue.

What does it say about the State of Victora? What does it say about the human race and society in general that we promote this activity in the year 2015?

Am I the only person on the planet thinking this way?

Universal Fighting Championship - mixed martial arts or even cage fighting. Pretty brutal by all accounts, but I haven't watched a match.

IIRC correctly, permission for UFC to commence in Victoria was an election commitment for the Victorian Labor Party*. The majority of people obviously didn't think it was enough of an issue to vote for the other parties.

*if not a commitment - they had certainly stated they would allow it if elected.

Isn't it modern day Wrestling, with less choreography.

Completely agree. I have to change the channel if it pops up on TV. I can't help but imagine the damage they are doing to their brain, rattling around inside their skulls as someone crouches over the top of them - punching them in the head.

For a minute there I thought you were talking about seat reclining in Economy.

Maybe there's a reality show in that.

they put 2 people in a cage - male and females - and encourage them to smash each other into submission.
Just a note, males vs males and females vs females, not mixed at all.

Honestly I don't see it that far from boxing/muay thai mixed with some jiu jitsu and wrestling. Would be better if they wore gloves? yes but then this limits the jiu jitsu aspect. (they do wear a bit of padded finger-less gloves though).
Alot of matches don't end in them smashing each other into obliteration. The few matches I have seen the ref's are normally very good at stopping fights the second someone is deemed not defending them self enough (better then boxing).
Yes there are some KO's and the likes, and there always will be in all these sort of sports, which is never good.

Overall Im not a die hard fan or anything, but these are very well trained athletes who are paid very well and chose to do this. If they were forced into it it would be an entirely different situation.

Not a fan myself. Don't mind wrestling, but anything that involves beating the absolute cough out of someone doesn't really appeal to me personally.

I can understand why people like it. I can understand why people don't like it. You're not missing anything, it is two people trying to knock out or submit each other.

If you don't like it, don't watch it?

Suzie when you say 'Wrestling' do you mean like WCW or whatever they call it now - you know the totally staged stuff - or Greco Roman like in Olympics??

I like the Olympics versions - Greco Roman and Freestyle. It's tactical and doesn't require the opponents to destroy each other. I guess each to their own though - makes the world interesting (not necessarily better though). :)

Greco Roman and Freestyle wrestling were a big component of the UFC in the early days and many of the US fighters came into the sport via college wrestling programmes. At the start, most specialised in a particular martial art - jiu-jitsu, BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which involves a lot more ground work and grappling), karate, judo, kung fu, kickboxing, wrestling etc. But the sport changed over the years and now many of the fighters train in a number of different styles, hence MMA or "mixed martial arts" is the term that's often used. These guys (and girls now, of course) train long and hard for years, and are very highly skilled athletes. Mr Jurahn (who has trained in martial arts since he was a teenage) and I have been UFC fans for years, although not having Foxtel, we get little chance to watch any of it these days - the behind the scenes documentaries such as "Countdown to UFC" which give insights into the lives and backgrounds of many of the top fighters are fascinating, although we can only get access to them on Youtube these days.

And yep, it's each to their own - I love martial arts and the UFC. However I don't watch football (can't stand it, especially AFL), cricket (bores me to tears), tennis (bores me even more than cricket), and as for golf ... and I've never been a fan of boxing either, I have to say. And yes, there's millions of people who love those sports - but I don't, so I don't watch them.

I don't get it either, paying people to beat each other up. Barbaric.

Unless it's Mundine losing, I can support that.

Sport? It's a joke.

And Rousey really needs to fight a man to come back down to earth. She is flying high. The arrogance shines through.

There are sports I'm interested in and sports I'm not. I don't bother to start a thread about each of the latter, though. I don't even really care about the definition of "sport". It is what it is.

I have a 4-4 record in MMA and that gives me somewhat of an appreciation of what is involved. Partner is much more successful, and that has given me further insight.

To each his or her own.

I am a massive fan, spent $800 for a single ticket a few years ago for the 20th anniversary show in Vegas.
watch every PPV and pre and post fight press conferences.
All I ask for is that people who want to argue the sport should be banned, just do some research on the sport and the safety aspects vs boxing vs pro football etc.

Money money..... Least unlike the GP this aint costing the Victoria budget 50-100 million to run!!!
I must say has anyone that hates it ever been to a live fight with a ref.....I dragged a girl to a Thai fight in Thailand..... In the end I had to drag her away from it.... Would not shut up about how good it was!!!!

Seriously, you would cheer on a woman being beaten by a man?

Yes, Im aware she most probably could knock out most men on a daily basis but a confident, pushy woman makes you want to see her beaten?

For Wrestling, Ive seen too much gay male cough to ever take it seriously
