UK rolling out Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

So maybe I should wait to apply as I will be 70 on May 2nd and we will be in Budapest on that day. We arrive in London on May 9th.

That'd interesting. Well I guess I would get one for free based on age and citizenship.

Just don't try transitting LHR without one...
Dual citizens with a UK passport do not need an ETA.

Still can't find where it says free for over 70s.

My brother who is over 70 has been bragging about it. I'm not. Yet.

I have really felt the physical impact this last year of being mid-70s. Now using dumbbells and resistance bands to offset a bit, but like you not bragging, just relieved I can still do as much as I do.

Edit: If anyone finds a reference to free for over 70s, please post.

This link doesn't seem to be working now

I can't find anything that states this. Brother thinks that you still need the ETA but not pay. It wants my passport when I try to apply and as I'm not 70 I can't test the theory.

Ah that article already posted.

SURPRISE: If you are under 18 or over 70, you won’t need to pay the fee!

There is nothing in the official documentation implying age exemption for the UK ETA.
The fact that the ETA will apply to transits points to the likelihood of this occurring.
"We are keeping this under review."

I'll likely apply in the next month or so, but wouldn't trigger any potential contextual variance to the payment page. (i.e. currently between 18-70)

ETIAS (upcoming for the EU) on the other hand will have such an exemption.

We need to go back to the 60s when Brits and Aussies were free to live in each others counties without Visas.
Why? The UK is simply another foreign country. We should only allow their citizens to live here if it is to Australia's advantage. And they are entitled to take the same approach.

Dads passport was British stamped on the cover even though he wasn't a Brit.

There appears to be no age based exemption on any official documentation I can find online. In fact, the Official Guidance document (attached) has this:
Each traveller must get their own ETA, including children and babies.

Today Mrscove started on the new 6 month visa for the UK.
It didn’t go too well so she will be phoning them tomorrow.
We are arriving on January 13th so it appears the new system will apply.

Glad I’m not travelling to or through the UK around 7-9 Jan. I can see the travel chaos headlines now…

Is anyone here in that unfortunate position?

If you have the eVisa, should be no drama. Just rock up to the Smartgates as normal.

I just left the UK and on arrival in Spain was greeted by a sea of plastic wrapped PP eReaders waiting to be fired up!

I would have thought this visa check would have been done at check in before the flight. I cannot get on a US bound flight without an ESTA.
Mind you, there will still be chaos. There is already at busy times.

Correct. You won’t be permitted to check-in/board without one.

Hopefully system is geared up for the transition.

Given approvals are happening within minutes, it may be ok as long as people check-in early enough. And provided the system isn’t overwhelmed!

Hopefully airlines have written to their pax with upcoming bookings to the UK.
