Umbrellas and other things at Airport Screening

About 1 in every 100 times I pass through a checkpoint, they ask me to remove my small umbrella from my carry-on and spread it out on a tray so they can xray it again... I asked once and they only do it if there is a high metal concentration (eg all of the metal parts of the small umbrella folded close to each other), and it's remotely possible that there could be a knife or syringe etc concealed in there... when they have a clearer view on the xray, they don't need to ask for it to be separated.

Thanks for that. I've never been asked before so I was curious if this was something new. I remember when they got tough on the aerosols it was a very sudden change in policy, with it being a non issue on the forward flight and BIG issue on the return (due to the fact that my aerosols comprised of some very expensive, lid-less hair products:!: )

I've noticed it's happening more often. We asked in PER a few nights ago - apparently the mass of metal is a problem on the screen. It's easier for security to ask people up front rather than having to pull the bag aside, take the umbrella out, rescreening, etc.

I now just take it out of my carryon and put into the tray along with liquids - but I don't take it out of the brolly cover. Sunday, at Brisbane, the security officer felt all along the brolly, then thanked me for having it ready for inspection.

I heard one of the security staff at MEL T3 (DJ/ZL) calling for umbrellas to be removed for separate screening recently. Being my first DJ flight I just assumed it was a DJ thong as I could not recall having to do the same on QF. Whatever the reason, the umbrella came out without prompting the rest of the weekend.

Had no issues at Sydney or Adelaide over the weekend with my small fold up umbrella, I guess like anything when it comes to screening it comes down to the one watching the screen.

Mel QF Dom, was asked if I had am
Umbrella, I did but from routine automatically said no as I already had pulled out my laptop and aerosol. I was on autopilot oops. Bag was pulled up and broli pulled and re-screened.

You can scan over my umbrella.... Lol

I've found it's mainly a Melbourne thing (what's wrong with those people?).

I fly over 300,000 miles a year and it only ever happens in melbourne victoria.

It clouds my thinking on the place (and I have lived there as well).

I always carry an umbrella in carry on. I have been asked to remove it for separate checking on a number of occasions at BNE, but never anywhere else.

CBR security gets a bit cough about umbrellas and I am often asked if I am carrying one when passing through.

I went through MEL Int security today (Wed 30th) and my umbrella was totally ignored.

Totally ignored in BNE today also. (Thur 1st)

At BNE on Monday was the officious woman that I recognised from past encounters-it was umbrellas,e books,lipsticks and some other item.Now we have just finished a Circle Pacific trip and nowhere did we have to take out our kindles including SYD.As well mrsdrron left her lipsticks in her bag and nothing was said.
Possibly then some agents just like having power.

Screening at Changi airport on Monday and I was asked to take out any laptops and ipads for screening. I can understand the laptop but this is getting crazy if they now want ipads out as well, where is the risk in the ipad?

Many years ago (but post 9/11), a good friend of mine was travelling around Australia conducting nuclear, chemical and biological training for customs and other relevant government departments. This required him to carry a special metal briefcase which contained as close as you can get replicas of all the known chemical and biological agents (anthrax etc) and they were all conveniently marked as such on each bottle. Whilst the briefcase was checked in and not carry-on I was still expecting a tap on the shoulder and 'please explain' when we collected the case from the baggage carousel but to my surprise we just picked up the case and walked out of the terminal.

Love how inconsistent those apparent "security threats" are around the world, got lectured on how I shouldn't take Ipads out because they don't pose a threat whatsoever at various US airports just two weeks ago Guess this only goes to show that most of those rules are absolute rubbish. Same as with those evil mobiles that need to be switched off in flight while it has been proven many times that they don't cause any harm: If those devices were a threat what so ever, we'd hear about planes falling from the sky on a daily basis given how many people will simply forget to switch their Ipads and similar off! :shock:

At BNE domestic, I find that QF tend to ask for umbrellas to be removed, but never been asked by DJ or JQ.

A humble fork.

Did about 5 or 6 sectors without realising it was in shoulder bag. Got pulled up BNE, yet 1 hour previously, it was allowed to go through ROK airport.

The 100ml limit is a joke. You can fly pretty much everywhere in Europe in under 4-5 hours, but no liquid over 100ml, but you could take as much liquid as you want on a BNE-PER sector.
