Unspoken Rule of Air Travel

The lady in Economy 4D then thought to use the armrest of 3D as a footrest (with thongs, albeit nice wooden ones).
In business on an AA 767 LAX-JFK, the woman in the window seat next to me sat slouched in her seat, with her legs straddling the seat in front, left foot on the armrest of the seat in front, right foot on the center console between the seats.

There is nothing worse than passengers with bad breath, particularly if they are good sleepers and very quickly you have some one next to you, asleep, with mouth wide open and a shocking odour emanating every time they breath. At that point, all enjoyment is lost, whether it be your meal or your movie. There is nothing more selfish than people not looking after personal hygiene and that includes bad breath.
One contributor to the problem is airline food (especially in the air, but lounges too) which is often packed with excessive garlic.

I do this all the time, it's quite comfortable! But only ever use the end few CM of the armrest to ensure the pax infront does not notice or is disturbed. It's all about the angles...

Excessive garlic! No such thing.Try going to The Stinking Rose restaurant in SF.40 clove chicken, now there's a dish.
Actually in September we will be eating at their sister restaurant-the Dead Fish at Crockett-just outside SF.Looking forward to the platters of Mussels, shrimp and crab liberally laced with garlic.:cool:The next day flying AA to LAX.

... A trip to Fiji last week reminded me of another of my hates. People who push the carry on size past reasonable limits. They struggle to carry the bag down the isle, then they struggles to fit into storage. In economy, there's limited space as it is. I'd like to see carry on limits enforced.

I'm all for taking carry on only - I do it myself often, even on international trips, but I stay within the limits.

That is for sure my #1 pet hate. So many times I have come so close to saying something to these inconsiderate ****'s but each time I bite my tongue.

Check it in people!

I have to say that I hate these people that drag on excessive puggage and I took great pleasure at the dude who got pulled up last week with 3 items on my Monday flight. Especially as I'd seen him on the flight before and he was the worst kind of overhead space hog.

But IME, enforcing the luggage requirements can be a bad thing. In my situation I would prefer to take 3 bags, 105cm rollaboard, briefcase sized bag and a small backpack, which I could stow by putting the roller in the locker with the small backpack on top filling that small gap, and breifcase under the seat. Instead I had 2 bags the roller and a over shoulder bag. Neither really fit fully under the seat, so from a safety POV they should be put in the locker and that means I ahve to take up extra locker space.

The other people I really hate are the bad opverhead locker packers. Those people who have a small bag containing only their 13" laptop, who plonk that in the locker laying flat with their jacket on top. Hence taking up a massive amount of locker space. Or who lay down the suit pack to occupy the maximum space next to the laptop bag. Stack people! There are 3 dimensions to be used.

I bloody hate the Y class pax who place their luggage in the overhead bins in the J cabin before sauntering down the back of the plane. When I see this I always remove them and let the FA know.

That irks me too.. Place your luggage where you are sitting, not up the front! I've rocked up to my seat to see no one there but luggage overhead..

Agreed. I have a 5-hanger garment bag (it closes into a large-briefcase size). I recommend them to any serious hand-luggage-only flyer who needs to wear a suit at the other end.

Having said that, on our last flight I think we checked more bags than Elizabeth Taylor and the Beckhams combined...

What sort of bag is it?

Isn't that why we breed??

If I EVER need to check in luggage.... I get my son to tag along.... He gets a free trip and I don't have to concern myself with the luggage!!

Win - Win!!

Are there models you can plug into the laptop power at your seat? Or is that a niche market that's ripe for exploitation?
A work colleague has such a model and uses it on all overnight flights. I've been told that cpap.com has an extensive collection of models including ones suitable for use in-flight.

Another thing that drives me mad is people using the bathroom with no shoes on.
Personally, I wouldn't want to walk in the bathroom (or anywhere on a plane) barefoot, but why should it bother you if someone else does it? Them walking barefoot doesn't make my feet dirty. :p

Perhaps that particular story is an urban myth, but there are a lot of similar stories (mainly from FT) which are very close to this one.

I love the ones where the antagonist/whiner gets shut up publicly in the cabin, then all pax in the vicinity start applauding.
Well, sure, most people also love such stories, which is why the urban legends featuring them are created and spread.

FWIW I have been looked down upon before by other pax due to my age, appearance (i.e. not in business wear whilst travelling during business hours), race and apparent social class. Some give the silent death stare treatment (perhaps envy), some others have a bit more ill nerve and vocalise their thoughts. Some of them I just let karma do its magic (and in some cases, it has!); in other cases all you can do is offer a brief witticism and walk away.
As strange as it is for me to think there are people who care that someone who doesn't look like a "typical business man" is in business class, it's mind-boggling to think someone would not only care, but also say something about it!

Many years ago, when I was a university student, I also was a staff employee and hence entitled to use the private faculty/staff dining club and to bring a guest. Once, while I was dining with a fellow student, we couldn't help hear the woman behind us, who appeared to us kids as ancient, inquire of the server, "I say! Has your admittance policy changed?" (with "admittance policy" stressed and drawn out). Even that was a private dining club, not an airplane, and also in the early 1980s.

This is something that was playing on my mind on my recent trip to Wellington as I had 2 suits in front with business BP's. I was wondering what they would think if an 18 year old uni student also had a business pass and ended up next to one of them in my t-shirt and jeans.

I think it would be an interesting social experiment. I may just have to book one of those BNE-MEL-SYD-NAN fares in the next 12 months to see what happens!
Why would they care? Here in the States, it's quite common to see people in shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops in business and even first.

11. If you are American, please don't speak on your mobile phone in public. Most of you have louder voices than the rest of the world and we don't care to hear your business.
Why is it only Americans who shouldn't do this?

OT, but as far as escalators go in different towns/regions/countries go, I simply observe the locals and do as most appear to be doing.
Seoul, I think, recently switched from walking on the left/standing on the right to the other way around, although they still drive on the left. On a recent visit, it seems that many people, especially older ones who were undoubtedly raised to walk left, can't or won't adjust. The result is that many escalators are blocked, with people standing to the left adjacent to those standing to the right.
