Unspoken Rule of Air Travel

That reminds me of another one - bored kids behind me who find it amusing to see how hard they can kick my seat. It's normally only a problem in economy, but alas, occasionally i fly that way, and will do so to Fiji next Saturday. Please don't let there be kicking kids behind me.

Re my earlier comment on opening the window shades, I appreciate that when coming in to land, and take offs there may be a good view. However, most flights are at 30,000 ft, and not much to see most of the time.
First time i flew J domestic was almost my last. firstly the seat was too large, i wasn't jammed in so I had muscle pains from having to hold myself up, ;). I also had a kid kicking the back of my seat all the way from MEL to BNE

I always find the view of the earth to be amazing from 30000 ft. Especially, afghanistan and the Caspian Sea

OK we've read plenty re noisy kids.

How about the guy on my flight (QF068 HKG-PER) last night who decides 0200 is a good time to read? His light shines straight into out 3 year old's face just as she's nodding off (the 3 of us had 4 seats so she was a shoe in to sleep) causing her some distress and creating noise in our vicinity which took us a while to sort out.

The entire first 5 rows of Y (we were 3rd row) were pitch black except this guy's light. Would anyone consider this a breach or is it like the window scenario on a daytime flight?

If it is considered the same as utilising the window during daylight hours is that then not the same as utilising the seat recline function? (Devil's advocate there. I don't mind a recline but I'll always come upright during a meal and will always ask that the person in front of me do the same).

Have to say, no issue with the light being used. It's an individual light (surprised it shone on your child's face, they're generally lined up to the seat they service), meant in part for just such situations. A shame about it disrupting the little 'un, but IME the lights are not adjustable for direction at all.

It's a tricky one. For someone suffering jet lag, reading is a way to break the boredom. However, I'd be more inclined to watch a video, rather than turn on a light when others want to sleep. In by opinion, this is going too far, particularly if it obviously effects others.

A few weeks ago flying to PMQ I had the pleasure of sitting next to a lovely lady who lived in London and said her husband was QF's most frequent flyer between LHR & SYD (anyone on here?) and that because of this she often got to fly in First Class.

BUT....

She didn't call it that, she called it Fart Class :D She says that people up there seem to forget they are sharing the space (generous as it may be) with others and have no manners or self control. She said she preferred to fly J.

Now having never had the chance to fly right up front, does anyone here who does, share her perception?

I have had two experiences in QF F and I can say that I do not share her perception on both of these.

I don't have the smelling sensitivities of a bloodhound, but I can still say that it isn't what she has said. Of course, with her having more experience in the class = larger sample size = probably a better idea (or not, perhaps just unlucky ;) :D).

I remember being in 744 F last November and I was in 2A; in 1A was a particularly large lady who probably needed a F seat because it was the only seat that could support her 'carriage' on the aircraft. Now I know equating the size of a person to their propensity to emit methane is a flawed argument, but in saying that there was nary a bad smell throughout the cabin (and there was broccoli on the menu...). I also did not notice any other particular bad habits from any of the other 6 pax in the cabin.

With the 388 F, the tall walls of the suites would probably mitigate against any errant odours except if they were being produced ad "nauseum" (pun intended).

That's an interesting observation, and doesn't correspond with my personal experience. F pax with no manners? No more than some of the atrocious behaviour I've witnessed from J pax.

Hmm I probably would have gone a movie myself, but since I'm useless at sleeping on planes/trains/automobiles, I tend to stay awake the whole time (long trip or overnight whatever) and make the most of catching up on some reading (hell actually devoting time to reading a good novel!) or churning through movies. Probably does get annoying for those next to me, especially as my night vision means I have to have the screens nice and bright!

I assume she wasn't of the size that she could have had a small lamb roast from 3 years ago trapped in a fold of skin somewhere?.

Are you joking?

Have you never savoured the aroma of a truffle? It's the reason I fly up "there".

Another one is when people try to put their bags under THEIR seat, and not the one in front, I always just pick it up and hand it back to them over the seat!

Iron ore dust on the bottom of my steel cap boots gets people moving their bags pretty quick. Iron ore leaves a red/pink tinge on everything.

I have always thought it was the window pax option to have them open or closed unless directed by FA's.
I agree. If I am in the aisle seat I would not expect the person sitting in the window seat to shut the window shade unless the sun was shining very brightly directly into the cabin.

When in a window seat I will usually close the blind unless I think something is worth looking at and as I like to watch movies anyway I prefer them shut.
The only time I am in a window seat these days is when flying business class and I love looking outside especially at night watching city night lights.

I can't remember now but does it matter if the window shades are not shut at night?

I NEVER sit in a window seat. However... If someone is sitting in 1A..... At night I have no problem with the window shade being open. In fact, you don't really notice unless you are in clouds and the flashing light is reflecting off them.

During the day... I prefer the shade down if there is a bright sun. I will always ask the person in 1A if they mind. In almost all instances it has never been a problem.

I ALWAYS sit in a window seat. My bladder is good and I like the view; but those were the old days. With the 1-2-1 configs on most F these days I can't imagine someone actually getting up and asking me to close the blind. If they did, I'd suspect I'd go with NYCguy's suggestion of ....

Yeah. When I fly Long Haul, I use Emirates, and in that instance I choose 1A. My whole aversion to the window, is lack of access to the aisle. Due to my fear of flying, I don't like the feeling of being "trapped in". ALL of my QF flights over the past 10 odd years have been DOM and Trans Tasman J so there is always 2-2-2 at least! Row 1 left side aisle is ALWAYS my seat of choice. I have not taken a window seat blocked by another seat since I was a teenager.

Dude, do whatever you have to do. Just don't ask me to close the blind should I be enjoying the view and we're stuck together on a 2-2-2. But don't worry, that will never happen unless of course of a last moment config change, which is unlikely to happen statistically... Damn, I guess I'll see you next week given my recent luck.

"Dude"

Unless the sun is streaming through the window and annoying me..... I don't give a toss whether the shade is up, down or half way between. If your head is blocking the window, that will do just as well as the shade.... Just keep it there. I'm not interested in looking out the window at all.

As I stated in my earlier post.... I would ASK the passenger seated there..... I am also a very polite person. If someone was particularly ignorant about the whole situation.... I would close the shutters myself when they went to the bathroom to clean the glass of red wine off their shirt/pants.
