Unspoken Rule of Air Travel

There is nothing worse than passengers with bad breath, particularly if they are good sleepers and very quickly you have some one next to you, asleep, with mouth wide open and a shocking odour emanating every time they breath. At that point, all enjoyment is lost, whether it be your meal or your movie. There is nothing more selfish than people not looking after personal hygiene and that includes bad breath.

Parents who insist on having small children/toddlers next to baggage carousel when you are trying to lift 20 odd Kgs off a moving belt is fairly out there but maybe that is just stupidity, not rudeness.

Shoes off is fine, but not socks.

Shoes on seats is just plain bogan as far as I am concerned.

Talking of which, I am amazed at the rudeness and bogan behavior that I see in Qantas Club. There appears to be a complete lack of unspoken rules in there!

I only just saw this thread, so this may have been said by others. My main gripes :

1. Economy passengers who use the business class lockers to save them carrying their bags down the plane isle.

2. Window passengers who leave the shutter open with direct sunlight while the isle passenger is watching a movie.

3. When boarding, people who block the isle while putting their luggage in the lockers, instead of stepping into the seat area and letting a few people past before attending to their luggage. This could halve the time to load an aircraft.

4. Attractive ladies in first class who stand next to seat 1A, and get changed in full view - distracts me from the movie. (Only happened to me once).

5. Screaming kids. (I feel sorry for the parents, and know it often can't be helped, but I still hate it).

6. Sitting next to a smoker - the smell is often still in their clothes.

1. Do not allow your children to run unaccompanied down the aisle while the parents watch their movie.

2.In economy, share the arm rest.

3.No conversation when the other person has the head set on and watching TV.

4.Clean up in the bathroom. The amount of swines astonishes me.

You may hate it, but if it is a day time flight and the cabin isn't being prepared for all to sleep, I'd say there's not a lot you can do about it.

Thanks for reminding me. As someone who loves flying, the thing I absolutely hate most and should be an unspoken rule and that is that if it is day time outside, then whether others are sleeping or not, I should be allowed to open my window. On some of the London to Singapore /Bangkok flights you get the most spectacular views of Afganistan and other magnificent mountain areas. If I have paid for my seat and the other passengers have been issued with business class amenity kits with eye shades, then I should be allowed to look out my window and they can please themselves with their eye shades.

I have always thought it was the window pax option to have them open or closed unless directed by FA's.

When in a window seat I will usually close the blind unless I think something is worth looking at and as I like to watch movies anyway I prefer them shut.

Things may get a little breezy if you did that! :p

Seriously though, I agree with what you say...if there is something worth looking at you should be able to do so. I would however try and manage things so I don't affect the movie-watching of other pax (though obviously not always possible).

I'll confess now that I'm an aisle seat person so not likely to be in that situation, but if I was...

I had a very angry PAX behind me when me and seat mate (isle) ooo'd and ahhh'd at the Himalayas on a CX A330 FRA/HKG. We had the two shades open adjoining my seat - it was daytime outside, and PAX fore and aft had eyeshades... T'was a care factor of very little...

Mr!

What I really hate is when the person behind tries to shove a ton of stuff into the seat pocket, especially watter bottles and other hard items, I find it digs through into your back. Then when they isist on keep moving stuff around and letting the pocket ping against the seat...

Another one is when people try to put their bags under THEIR seat, and not the one in front, I always just pick it up and hand it back to them over the seat!

And one more is when you have an aisle seat and board early, but then people try to climb over you to get in their seat rather than wait for you to stand up and move into the aisle. Happens heaps in China, I usually just shout loudly at them and they back off until I've stood up and moved.

And rightly so. The novelty of an early morning flight over the Tibetan Plateau never fades. This, whingers in other seats, is what your eye-shades are for. Wear them.

Not a fan of that either. For some reason, I really couldn't understand why my bag wasn't going under the seat in front of me on a flight to SYD last year (after delays and aircraft change, making us late for an Intl connection). I stupidly/belligerently kept pushing and pushing my bag, so that it wasn't intruding and I wasn't going to attract the ire of an FA. Ended up getting a nasty look from the lass in front of me and the lad with her, and she pretty much huffed as she moved her bag away from the crazy pushy lady behind her, and oh my gosh, put it under the seat in front of her.
I'm happy to put my bag under the seat in front of my, but by golly gosh, don't mess with my remaining 5cm of leg room!

forget the feet, it’s the arm pits that can fill the air from rows away!! and funny these people are usually the one that insist on raising an arm up and holding onto the backs of seats

I've lost count these days of the number of people who've been sitting in the wrong seat (AKA my seat) - and worse it's even happened on occasions when I've flown in J.

Flying SYD-BNE in June 2008 I settled in what I thought was my window seat. I found myself seated next to a very large lady who could not fit into the middle seat, meaning that my space was very limited.

However another passenger came along and pointed out that I was in his seat. I had the row numbers wrong and was very happy to move.

My in-laws, they are clean freaks, refuse to put their handbags below the seat in front of them when taking off/landing. The FAs constantly reminded them about this, they will try to hold the bags on their foot when taking off ...... they think that I am dirty when putting my bags underneath the chair in front .....

Jeez, what about where they're parking their @rses?:p

Not wise to assume the floor is the only 'germy' place. ;)

Well once they get home they immediately changed their clothes to "home clothes" without touching anything else :) They always wonder how I can be so dirty :D

That reminds me of another one - bored kids behind me who find it amusing to see how hard they can kick my seat. It's normally only a problem in economy, but alas, occasionally i fly that way, and will do so to Fiji next Saturday. Please don't let there be kicking kids behind me.

Re my earlier comment on opening the window shades, I appreciate that when coming in to land, and take offs there may be a good view. However, most flights are at 30,000 ft, and not much to see most of the time.

One day they will be told by a crew that they are creating a possible missile hazard by having their bags on their feet rather than under the seat in front or in the overhead compartment, and will be promptly escorted off the aircraft.

CX have done it - I eagerly await the next such incident to happen....

OK we've read plenty re noisy kids.

How about the guy on my flight (QF068 HKG-PER) last night who decides 0200 is a good time to read? His light shines straight into out 3 year old's face just as she's nodding off (the 3 of us had 4 seats so she was a shoe in to sleep) causing her some distress and creating noise in our vicinity which took us a while to sort out.

The entire first 5 rows of Y (we were 3rd row) were pitch black except this guy's light. Would anyone consider this a breach or is it like the window scenario on a daytime flight?

If it is considered the same as utilising the window during daylight hours is that then not the same as utilising the seat recline function? (Devil's advocate there. I don't mind a recline but I'll always come upright during a meal and will always ask that the person in front of me do the same).
