Upcoming Qantas Frequent Flyer Changes

It is quite ineresting that I could get to LHR on SQ for 180k using J ex PER and First on SIN-LHR or just over a million points to go QF. Now that's a tough call I said to myself.
Which one would you pick??
I believe you are comparing business savers to Any Seat awards which is not really that fair.

And SQ is not always the best solution either. It just happens to suit you better than Qantas.

I want to redeem Oneworld awards but the *Alliance equivalent requires a whole lot more miles and I believe is harder to book.

And what is that likely to achieve other than aggravate the people who are in favour of the curfew?

Why do people want a few piddly international flight to be able to land throughout when there are not likely to be any domestic fliights at 3:00am as domestic airlines are not going to schedule flights at oof-peak times?

I was comparing July 2012 and QF was well and truly out by 5 + times on points. Mrscove is a QF first girl so I have to look before we book and she is WP with QF.

No the flight that I want into SYD is the last JQ flight of the night MCY-SYD.Leaves MCY at 2100 year round. No problems in winter but when DST hits is is scheduled into SYD at 2230.Now with JQs on time performance there have been plenty of times it misses and it is either cancelled or ends up in NTL.After getting in to SYD with literally 30 seconds to spare on 1 occasion I am not willing to risk it again even though it could be the most convenient timing for me.

And my conundrum continues awaiting P1 announcement...

I am tossing up putting a round trip (HON/DFW/NYC/ORD/SEA/FAI/ANC/HON) on my AA membership as it will get me to Platinum and be worth 100,000+ bonus pts per year (which will then get me to EP the next year)

This will cost me approx 10,000 points on Q and 630 SC's. The status credits would put me within striking distance of P1 prior to my march 12 end of year...

So what is P1 really going to be worth???

How will being Platinum and getting 100K+ bonus points get you to EXP the next year? Status has no impact on qualification requirements under AA.

@ JohnK

I'd settle for slightly more leniency for dealyed flights rather than carte-blanche 24/7 operations into SYD.

It's crazy to have to divert a 380 worth of pax (or a 767 worth, or a 737 worth) if it's running late en-route. It's also not very green for aircraft to be circling waiting for the AM curfew, or to fly half way then turn back to start (as has happened with various MEL-SYD flights over the years).

I suppose the carbon tax will solve that.....

I was reading the "100% elite status bonus miles" as being elite qualifying miles for AA. On closer inspection ive misread that, it would just be usable points.

Ill be doing 100000 elite qualifying miles next year anyway (on alaska airlines, no status credits on qantas so i use AA) so its probably just loss of SC towards P1 vs having the points on AA

Goodo - it is interesting that I have seen that error twice here now and I don't want anyone getting caught out - building a qualification path on incorrect info.

Once I hit Lifetime Gold and if I am flying enough to maintain Plat on AA and WP on QF - as many points as possible will go to AA again.

It's the "Elite" Mileage bonus v "Elite" Qualifying miles that is slightly misleading.

I find redemption via AA certainly provides more flexibility at a cheaper points cost than QF - im in hawaii so there is really only 1 QF flight i take, but many AA options to the mainland

Don't forget that P1 is going to have a substantial component of QF-only earned SC's, they've stated that (just not the actual number), so this trip would not count towards any of them (no idea how many SC's you earn on QF in your year, just letting you know...)

I think this is what will impact me, particularly if JASA/FASA SC's are not counted. :-|

So your issue is really with JQ and the Queensland government for staying an hour behind the world.

There is a difference between the occasional leniency and lifting the curfew.

Lifting the curfew means that flights can be scheduled to land and depart throughout the night which I do not think is a good idea. It is bad enough listening to that rubbish at 6:00am.

Also what would you consider leniency? Airline inefficiency or general weather issues?

Actually John it is often late coming in to MCY because of congestion in SYD delaying the SYD-MCY flight.

Doc, as a fellow commuter i feel your pain but it is a little unfair putting all the blame on SYD congestion and curfew.

Most other airlines seem to have these issues sorted out so perhaps your delays are more to do with JQ scheduling or lack thereof....

Certainly JQ have their scheduling problems and sometimes that is why the service is late but I often get that last JQ flight SYD-MCY.We may have boarded or the plane is at the gate on time when the announcement is made that due to congestion/conditions etc we will be delayed 15-30 minutes. Now you can blame JQ for scheduling a flight to MCY at peak times(1900 in winter,2000 in summer) but are we on the coast second class citizens-the timing allows a full day in SYD before returning home and so the load is generally high.DJ only have 1 morning flight, not an option.
Yes we all love to bag JQ,TT etc but it is not always their fault.

In terms of first class and second class airlines in SYD. I've observed similar differences in my 6am ADL-SYD flights. Both QF and DJ provide a flight at this time; only once has my QF been delayed for ATC reasons since Jan 2010. DJ had a consistent run of delays for ATC reasons. This has recently stopped after they changed departure time to 6:05am.

The great thing about ADL is you can see the QF aircraft pushing back while you're still waiting to board or are walking down the airbridge. or even out the window while sitting on a fully loaded aircraft waiting for your delay until 6:15am

It's a difficult one to fairly quantify. Do you allow
- mechanical?
- unwell pax necessitating a stop-off somewhere?
- weather?
- "ATC" delays?

I agree it's hard to draw the line. But IMHO scheduled flights should be allowed to proceed if they're running late. Flights should not be scheduled within the curfew periods.

I agree with this statement and all of the points you mentioned.

Red Roo stated several times in the other thread that all that is being announced on the 24th is the financial results. I guess we shall see ...

It looks likely that P1 is still scheduled for Q4.

I wonder if Red Roo can comment on the cut off date for earning qualification - i.e. if someones membership year ends September 30, and the programme starts Q4 (1st Oct) would a WP that had in excess of the qualifying SC's up to end Sept, have to start again in accumulating points before a status hike? This would seem unfair to loyal WP's, equally there must be some cut off point.
