So poor IT back end work would be the most likely candidate hey....

I'm curious but would bet this isn't one. Just more poor communication.

I'm not being bitter here btw - just stating facts as I see them. I enjoy flying VA and the privileges of being Gold (soon Plat) but this stuff makes it look like amateur hour. Even if it is an offer, why isn't it obvious?

The thing I find quite interesting is the URL that you are sent to if you click the picture within the email (which is another reason I think it's an offer): (emphasis added in bold by me)

Why would that make you think it's an offer, it doesn't imply anything other than the IT or marketing name for it is AspireToUpgrade, which to me doesn't reflect that it is an offer at all

why bother making a long unique URL for a promotional email if it just sends you to the 'book a flight' page?

It's just the name of the promotion. You can even see in the label that is the "campaign" name.
