UpgradeMe pricing and success

I had a flight for this Friday but last week called and moved flight to last Friday.

Today I receive an email for discounted upgrade rates for your flight to SYD. I wonder what would happen if I clicked on link?

My PER-MEL flight on 01/04 upgrademe bid of $340 for "The Business" has come through ~80 hours prior to Departure

Mel-Lst $80 accepted x 2 at T-80. Min bid for this sector was $70. Seemed like an okay deal to get access to VA lounge. However the reverse earlier Thursday Lst-Mel min bid was $140. Too rich for such a short flight with no lounge. The J cabin was flown empty on this sector.

Has anyone here ever redeemed their Amex free domestic flights with Virgin - and then managed to upgrade with points? I have heard it was possible, but saw an article that inferred it was a loophole that had recently been closed by Amex.....and that now you would have to pay to upgrade,

I haven't seen that posted here ... Not that it'd be much given the points cost from the fare buckets amex use.

I wonder if the fact it was empty factors in to their cost base for the upgrades.

I haven't tried it, but I suspect no. I recently upgrade two fares bought with the AMEX discount and the GCC lady first of all thought they were the free flights. She initially said that she didn't think she could do it, until I explained they were a normal revenue fare, just with the AMEX discount applied. All was good then.

Dumb question but what's the AmEx discount on Virgin? Is that something different from the $300 AmEx travel bonus?

The Platinum Edge card has a $200 travel credit which can be used with multiple airlines. Virgin is one of them.

Doing SYD - ADL on Friday night (in J, points upgrade from Y) and have bid $120 per seat for the return on Sunday which was the minimum and is now 'Under Review' according to the email I received yesterday so we'll see how we go.

SYD-MEL for $110 this morning (332 J) off an Elevate fare... there was only 3 people in J on this one (including me)
and just received an upgrade on
MEL-SYD for $110 for Friday evening also off an Elevate fare

So under $300 for J class each way, just under the limit I can expense for work :)

Hi - Dumb question here - Will I only be advised If I am successful in my bids for my return flights the 72 hours prior? or would they have processed with the outbound flights? (obv my first time using the UpgradeMe system).

I just had the two emails come through for the outbound sectors (successful)
$150 Syd to AKL and
$200 AKL to RAR

I can't remember the ranges but I think I bid the minimum on the way there, and a bit more on the way back (red eye flights) - so a bit more desirable to be successful.

I have only ever received the upgrademe and points upgrade confirmation just before each sector. Our SYD-LAX outbound ones came through at T-48 and the return flights were confirmed at T-48 3 weeks later. This was in 2016 though, so things may have changed.
