UpgradeMe pricing and success

Got an offer on an upcoming MEL-BNE but the system seems to struggle with a booking with an infant attached and wants to charge 2x the bid amount

Had booked Econ. X tickets for wife and I MEL-NAN return for our Fiji holiday. On first leg Bid $270 each for J and accepted. Return leg accepted at $250 each. With refund of $69 each for Econ. X seats, worked out to be a very cheap upgrade. Notified about 24 hours prior on each. Great service from Virgin on the way over, but pretty poor on the way back.

Nice to hear of the positive service for the outbound trip. But please elaborate on the return leg, as I am interested in your experience and review.

Being a B737 only the 8 seats in J. On the way over the Cabin Manager introduced himself to all passengers, pre departure drinks, etc, and attentive throughout the trip, could not fault the service in any way.
On the return the Cabin Manager did not offer any pre departure drinks, no personal introduction, came and took meal orders and very offhand toward passengers. He disappeared a short way into the trip, not seen again until just before landing. Nil offers of nibblies, coffee, tea, etc. The contrast in service was amazing.

That's a pretty poor display. The fact it was a 737 should not even come into the conversation.. There is simply no excuse for this type of service (or lack thereof) - especially in times of great financial controversy at Virgin Australia. No-one wants to pay such an elite fare for a hollow experience. What if that was the very first time you had flown in a J cabin at Virgin?
I've always maintained that a Business Class airline seat is something very few people get the opportunity to experience. And as such - it is still regarded as one of those Bucket List items for many of us. It isn't up to cabin crew to determine who is flying up front for the very first time, or who is flying home from the office for the thousandth time. If they don't consistently extend the kind of hospitality that Business Class is sold as, what's the point of it all?

$105 bid for BNE -PPP. I'd guess there's not much demand for J on such route :p
How does it work, do you get J SCs or Y SCs? J privileges?

Yep, I'm correct on not much demand, I was the only one. But yeah, a leisure route rather than a business route would do that.
You will get your original SC’s but all the J privileges.
Thanks a bunch.

SYD-HBA 7:30am Saturday 8th Elevate to Business for $150. Approved 4.30am this morning so 75 hours before departure. Booked to hopefully have a decent breakfast if not enough time in the lounge. To upgrade on points was ~17.5k so not great value on a two hour flight, so decided to lowball a bid. Was showing two business fares available before this morning and now only the one after the upgrade cleared. Thought being the start of the long weekend could work in my favour if the economy starts til fill up. Now only freedom fares avalabile.

If you dont get a msg within 24 hrs of an international long haul, does it mean unsuccessful, from experience?

My experience would attest to that fact. But that's not to say it's impossible. I've received an upgrade within 12 hours of VA1 - from a waitlist that was 9 months old.

HKG successful bids (2 passengers, price per passenger)

Thu 6 June VA83 SYD-HKG, $525 - $10 over minimum bid made 3 months before departure. Only one seat free in J on departure.

Tue 11 June VA82 HKG-SYD, $650 - minimum bid made 4 days before departure - noted at the time that there were only Business (not Business saver). Notified 24 hours before departure. Load on the A330 was full J but only 179 pax on the whole aircraft so it looks like HKG Is building slowly.

Paid $459 each for the round trip Getaway fare during sales, so the overall cost per pax was $1634 per passenger for 18 hours of business class service.

VA321 MEL-BNE 26/06
$110 minimal bid
I was on VA68 and bid was accepted while flying.

Only issue is that the J fare is in Z class and EY guest did not credit the original flight booking class S. Following up with them and we will see !
