US Dividend Miles - Oneworld Award Booking Questions and General Discussion

Also, I've just realized that your option 1 is no good due to at least 2 other reasons:
- you can't stopover within the same zone
- you can only stopover in a OneWorld hub or a US Airways overseas destination which San Sabastian is neither

oh I didn't realise I couldn't stop over with in the same zone. Thanks for that. So Madrid would be ok due to it is a Oneworld hub but then there is the whole computer glitch thing. Thanks for the link to the FlyerTalk forum. I now know what I will be doing for the rest of the night.

Is the Vienna - FRA ok? It is only 1 stop but Vienna is not a OW hub so would this be allowed?

not quite sure what you mean. If you mean you're doing your option 2 where there's an open jaw then it's fine
or did you mean something else?
Remember you really need to read the Dividend Miles membership guide, it's like 2 pages and 10 minutes but saves you a whole lot of time in questions and planning

Yes thanks, that is what I meant, Option 2.
Good idea, I need to refresh my memory and read the members guide. Thanks for the link

You can stopover with the same zone as your destination. Just you can't have a stopover on an intra-zone award.

What is a intra-zone and how do I then work out what is allowed with in the intra-zone?

An intra-zone award is where total award travel is within a single region. For example, PER-AKL is totally within the South West Pacific Zone. So you couldn't have a stopover in MEL or SYD on your way.

Other zones are Europe, SE Asia, North Asia etc etc.

Once you have more than one region you can stop anywhere you like. For example, MEL-LHR (stop)-FRA is just fine. you are stopping twice in Europe, but becuse you have two zones that's not a problem.

You're absolutely right, my fault - I withdraw reason number 1
However, reason number 2 still applies and makes this stopover invalid. It's not "anywhere you like". It has to be a partner airline hub city (or a US Airways overseas destination if travel involves US Airways).

I am wanting to book some flights and I’m not exactly sure if some of my routing choices would be allowed.

I have been looking at past booking and I have seen the various choices that people have booked using various stop overs and destinations

Can you please let me know if these options would be ok

Option 1
Melb – Syd – HKG – FRA – MAD – EAS (stop over) EAS – VIE (destination) //
FRA – HGK – Melb

Option 2
Melb – Syd – HGK – MXP – MAD – EAS//
VIE – FRA – HGK – MELB

Option 1 will be rejected because you cannot have both a stopover and an open jaw.

You'll hit a snag on option 2 as well because you cannot transit via MXP as it is not UsAirways transatlantic getaway cities or Oneworld hub.

agree you probably won't be able to stopover in EAS (or even perhaps get there on Iberian). But I can't see why this wouldn't be ok:
Melb-Syd-HKG-MXP-MAD (stop - open jaw)
[take fast train Madrid to San Sebastian (don't miss san sebastian!!!) & overland to Vienna]
VIE-FRA-HKG-Melb

Note you can also get cheap Easyjet flights into Bilbao if needs be. I'll be in the Basque country in two months time and can almost taste to pintxos already.

MEL-SYD-HKG-MAD-EAS//VIE-FRA-HKG-MEL would be fine. No need to buy a separate ticket to EAS if IB goes there. My only concern ins the 5 sectors on the outbound, MEL direct to HKG would be better.

A quick Q - does anyone know if its possible to get to Tahiti on USDM?

Theoretically yes as LAN flies there from Santiago via Easter Island once a week (on Tuesdays I think) but practically impossible...you'd probably need to book it as a separate award South America - South Pacific and position yourself in Santiago? Otherwise I can't really see how you can get there

Thanks everyone for your discussion and advice

MEL-SYD-HKG-MAD-EAS//VIE-FRA-HKG-MEL - thanks that looks like a great itinerary but I don't want to fly direct to MAD because there are no first class seats to MAD from HGK

I now don't think these options are going to work (with thanks from everyone's help on here) becasue the MAD-EAS is a IB flight and I am worried about the computer glitch and it will delete my ticket. I think the MXP-MAD is also an Iberia ticketed flight so I am guessing this is out also.

hmmm I need to rethink this

Thanks sergeyvzn - I feared that might be the case...

you would be fine to book CX/IB on those flights with a simple transit.

I'm not so sure, it would depend on the agent. I have tried numerous times recently with itineraries transiting via non Oneworld hubs to no avail...
