Gday

I would like to call this post - 'the ecstasy and the agony'.

Background- got back from Japan and Guam Tuesday. Great trip and keen to do it again at the right price. Realized that last night was my only chance so raced home from work and got to work. Checked availability, all good, bought the points, done, then hit the phones. Second call went all the way through to rates desk but then said it was 90k pp. Next few calls were getting worse ie 110k pp, no stopovers allowed, Tokyo is your destination as it you are there for the bulk of the time etc. Getting towards midnight now. Another call lady keen for me to feed her the flights. Decide to mix it up and head straight to Guam from Tokyo on the way in(previously i was trying to stopover in Tokyo for a week on the way to Guam). She puts the flights in quickly, all available, no rates desk, says that's 30k pp plus taxes and booking fee, i say book it now please. Done in less than 15 minutes including all the prerecorded bs at the start. Woohoo.

SYD-NRT-GUM-NRT-SYD for September. 3 nights Guam, 7 nights Tokyo. All JAL, all Business class. 30k pp plus ~$150 tax plus $50 booking fee.

Call the wife to tell her the good news. She says its great except we cant go as she has unavoidable work commitments in September. Bugger.

I know its early days but anyone know what the policy is for date changes on these kind of itineraries. Looking to push it back to April 2016. Will leave it in the system for now.

Thank you everyone for your inspiration and a reminder that there is still 8h18m left to get one past the keeper.

Pele.

nice. glad everyone is managing to get in with these last min GUM runs. think they've been a couple of people who've sneaked bookings in on the last few days of USDM after hearing very average success in the previous weeks/months.

i was in a very similar boat - we already have a trip booked for november but wanted to just try another run in jan. thought it might have been too close together, heard about the crazy wait times on the phone, didn't even bother in the end.. kinda wish i at least tried like you... could always change/cancel... it'll never come back now!

Currently have a USDM booking to Europe depart and return BNE, have now found better flights routing BNE via SYD if I can change these flights is there any payment penalty?.

You can try, especially so if it's now been reissued on AA stock. Worse they can say is no it'll cost you $150 change fee.

Hey guys, apologies I kept this under wraps for a while because I didn't want even the remote chance of it getting cancelled. Over the XMAS break I managed to book and travel on this beauty:

ADL-SYD QF J
SYD-SIN QF J (1 Night Stopover)
SIN-HKG CX J (1 Night Stopover)
HKG-NRT CX J (5 Night Layover)
NRT-GUM JL J (Destination)

GUM-NRT JL Y (1 Night Stopover)
NRT-MNL JL J (1 Night Stopover)
MNL-SYD QF J
SYD-ADL QF J

Also the icing on the cake it when I booked it (it took around a dozen HUACA) the lovely lady on the other end of the phone only charged 15,000 USDM points EACH. Could not freaking believe it. Only paid 30,000 in total for me and miss neon_crossing.

Also the IFE screwed up on the MNL-SYD route (I slept 75% of the flight anyway) and Qantas ended up giving me 10,000 QFF points for the inconvenience.

Cheapest flights EVER.

I always love to see a message in my email inbox that someone's posted something new in this thread.

And that is simply outrageous neon. Well done!!

Well done neon. I didn't realise USDM points were still around. I'm sure mine got swept up to AA at the merge.

Nah I booked this mid last year. I had forgotten I hadn't boasted about it yet on here. Missing USDM already.

Already used a chunk of AA points for a USA trip later in the year. AA aren't as good as USDM but still charge a hell of a lot less tax than Qantas do.

Our last USDM points

9/23: Perth*Hong Kong, 7:10am* 3:10pm, Cathay Pacific CX136 business class 14D & 14G
9/27: Hong Kong*Tokyo, 3:15pm* 8:25pm, Japan Airlines JL26 business class 8H & 8K
9/28: Tokyo*SFO, 12:05am* 5:45pm(*1 day), Japan Airlines JL2 business class 8H & 8K
10/21: LAX*Tokyo, 11:30am *3:25pm(+1 day), American AA169 first class seats 4D & 4G
10/22: Tokyo*Sydney, 7:25pm* 7:10am(+1 day), Japan Airlines JL771 first class 1D & 1G
10/23: Sydney*Perth, 10:30am *12:40pm, Qantas QF581 business class seat 5E & 5F

can anyone confirm that QF will have the new seats in J by Oct?

Gday

I got back from my second and final USDM Guam run about 10 days ago. It is sad to see DM gone. JL still my favorite airline. The latest possible departure date for any USDM redemptions was 25th March 2016. Spudwa i am guessing that your trip was from USDM miles that converted to AA miles?
