US election 2020

So what is Master FM's plan? How long has he been in the US and is he doing his Green Card/citizenship? Problem with being an expat is a lot of us were just going somewhere for a few years then you look around and it's been 10. At some point you do reach the point of no return back to Oz for the job market and you find yourself more aligned with your foreign home than your homeland. It's a slippery slope and especially when spouses/partners are from different countries of origin. Someone has to give in and be the expat.
It’s 6.5 years now and yes he has settled in and has a nice life with a good circle of friends, which makes it hard. His partner (who also works at Google), is from mainland China so that makes it a bit easier. She has a green card but he has been too lazy to get one.....

He really wants to travel and before COVID destroyed the world the plan was to move around Google offices and see the world that way, but of course everything is on hold now and working from home until the end of the year.

he did say if Trump won, he would not stay in the States, but I guess that is easy to say....

Exactly. So he won’t want to be the President who wasn’t re-elected.
Good point :)

he did say if Trump won, he would not stay in the States,

Think a lot said that last time. Not many followed through.

Certainly betting odds have Biden as a decent favourite at present.

I'm actually more interested to see whether the 'Trump' experience may shift the Australian Republican debate.
Historically you've had 40-70% in favour (at various points in time) of a republic but roughly split between direct election (US style) and appointed by Parliament (roughly the same as current GG (ok technically the government recommends to the monarch)) such that a vote on an actual constitutional change is unlikely to get up.

The concern for many is that he has got away with so much that the fight is being drained away from many and he has replaced most of the controlling positions in the national gov with cronies who will do anything for money.

The corruption of the legal system & administration generally is astounding for a country that used to pride itself as the model for democracy.

He has mobilised the troops against his own people and kidnapping of citizens off the streets is occurring that I immediately connect with images of dictators of Chile, Argentina, China etc.

Approved funding for fighting the pandemic is being funnelled to billionaires, his family enterprises and to the states where he hasn't been criticised.

The manipulation of polling booths to prevent citizens from voting, the replacement of AG's who ask too many questions, amongst others, are extremely disturbing.

We are watching the rise of a dictator with little being done to prevent it and a general malaise, complacency for a significant part of the population and another cohort more preoccupied with the pandemic and fear to worry about what is happening in DC.

American democracy is very different, and prima facie more democratic than the Westminster system we are more familiar with. But this also lends itself to more manipulation and more partisanship.

In Australia, for example, the AEC acts as an apolitical statutory authority answerable to parliament, but not interfered with by parliament. Some might suggest this is undemocratic. In the US, elections and electoral boundaries etc are managed much more by the (ruling) politicians leading tocontroversy about where boundaries are drawn, the number and location of polling booths etc - which is is what the AEC does here.

Also there are many elected officials in the US, such as DA's which here would be either direct (by the ruling party) or indirect (by the public servants) appointment. Can you imagine electing Crown Prosecutors in Australia?

The President should be praised for taking action to clean up the streets and cleansing the bureaucracy of traitors like Comey who, along with Clinton and a host of others, should be sent to Guantanamo for their despicable attempt to subvert the result of the 2016 election.

Oooooohhh lookeeee see.. we have a republican in our midst..and an open admirer of the current potus… a rare sight indeed… 🥴

Oh my god I just watched an interview with Trump on Fox News. Fox said the USA had one of the highest mortality rates in the world. Trump called fake news and said the USA had one of the lowest mortality rates in the world. I almost threw up....

Mary Trump, his niece, was right.

I have been trying to work out lately whether Fox are scripting this with his advisers or whether they are slowly turning on him.

This looked like turning on him. After Trump’s rant, Fox showed a chart showing what the real figures were and where the USA sat....

I think they have decided their ratings, which appear have been coming from a narrower base in the last year or so, can no longer rely on his undying support.

Possibly also coming to the conclusion probably not in their best interests to let him run riot over their editorials for the next 6 months if he gets dumped in November and incur his wrath for not supporting him better regardless of how they pander to him.

Lately he has been criticising Fox and heaping praise on another smaller network and courting them for a series if he becomes the exPOTUS thus Fox won't win him as the coughy prize anyway.

Worst thing that ever happened was Master FM moving there, as I have had to take an interest in what happens there.....

I also have a son living there...Charleston SC. He has a green card but no job at the moment. His wife (US citizen) is pregnant so I am taking a greater than normal interest in what's happening
