US election 2020

Nice bit of racism and ageism from Leek’s son in the Aus.

No. The woke media went into a mouth-froth not realising it was satire on Biden's own comment in a tweet after he named Harris as his running mate:

How about that? 😆 So, should we ping Biden a racist and ageist?

And then said he was going to have a lie down like in the cartoon? What was that implication... It’s quite unpleasant to describing people as having a “mouth-froth”.

So that's the bit you were concerned about? :) It was pretty obvious allusion to Biden's age - he's 77, 3 years older than Trump (big deal). Does the worry about the cartoon being 'racist' falls away when its shown that Biden used the same language? Serious question: does racism exist only when certain people of the same race express certain thoughts? Just imagine the frenzied howls that would have occurred from NY Times to the Guardian to the ABC if Trump had said those words about 'Black and brown girls'.

Here's the ABC's Matt Bevan saying that the cartoon's words were "so offensive that you can't even imagine Donald Trump saying it". I wonder if he could imagine Biden using the contentious expression? Ah, but that's another story, of course.

Let's recall a couple of Biden's other less illuminating comments:

“If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, you ain’t black.”

“Poor kids are just as bright as talented white kids.”

He's not a racist, certainly, he just has an interesting way with words, as is well known - like another presidential candidate I've heard. :)

It’s quite unpleasant to describing people as having a “mouth-froth”.

Yeah, I didn't refer to people.

I guess the point I was laboriously making above is that before cries or implications of 'racism' etc are thrown about, especially in the media, a bit of reflection would be useful and that things taken in isolation are rarely the true picture.

Somehow, I doubt Harris would have volunteered to be called, ‘a little brown girl’.

Well the twitter post of Joe Biden were words he actually said when introducing Kamala Harris.Said at 27.32 into the video.

Are the prominent posters in this thread trying to say one candidate is better than the other, or worse than the other?

I don’t understand how either side can seriously promote their side as being good. I’m glad I don’t have to choose between Those two when I vote.

Yes, not quite what the insulting cartoon was trying to convey.

Yep, both old guys have an old fashioned view of how to treat women. One is malevolent with it.

Probably a more preferable description compared to the one who is described as a moron, liar, not fit for office, etc, etc ............. by some who worked closely with him.

I’d say that one has proved himself to be malelevant and the other one is somewhat unknown as a Pres and the jury is out mostly so can’t be promoted as ‘good’. But, at least there is some empathy there. But, yes, it is a problem for the US voter.

Quite.

Yes, not quite what the insulting cartoon was trying to convey.

So is "... little girls woke up across this nation - especially Black and Brown girls ... " quite OK to be said/tweeted by a Presidential candidate, but

" I'll hand you over to this little Brown girl" is awful, insulting, racist etc etc when written by a cartoonist satirising what the said Presidential candidate tweeted?

Yep, both old guys have an old fashioned view of how to treat women.

Just women? Again, remember those Bidenisms:

“If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, you ain’t black.”

“Poor kids are just as bright as talented white kids.”
....

As I intimated up thread, it seems its not so much what is said/written, but who says/writes it that creates the outrage.

Are the prominent posters in this thread trying to say one candidate is better than the other, or worse than the other?

Dunno if I'm 'prominent' :) but I'm in the 'pox on both of them' camp. I find the selective outrage of the woke media fascinating, though.

A few people not going with the herd.

I wouldn’t be holding up TAB gamblers as bastions of knowledge here. Its fair to say that someone having a $100k bet at $2.15 when they could have stood to win 25% more by placing the same bet elsewhere is not too big on the brights.

Yes. Some of the punters have more money than sense. ;)

The large punters quoted above are just guessers. You know that immediately because no sharp punter is allowed on for those amounts with the TAB’s fixed odds business. Anyone with any idea what they are doing is given the flick fairly quickly from these wagering operators.

Sharp punters know the election results already? Who is going to win?

This is getting off topic both for this thread and this forum in general but winning at gambling is not about always betting the winning outcome. It’s about identifying the true chance of an event occurring and betting the side that represents value compared to the true odds. For example: suppose hypothetically I was able to bet on coin flips over and over again and someone gave me a $2.10 price for tails. I will only win 50% of flips but I will absolutely be a big winner over the long term.

Sharp punters consistently make bets with a positive mathematical expectation. Sharp punters are long term winners. Sharp punters are not tolerated at bookmakers like TAB, Ladbrokes, Sportsbet etc etc. They are either banned completely or have the size of bet they are allowed to make severely limited. Whatever way you look at it, people betting $100k on a US Presidential market with TAB (when you could Have taken $2.50 with minimal effort) are not sharp by any stretch of the imagination. They are losing gamblers just having a guess, hopefully just for entertainment purposes and without the delusions of thinking they have any idea what they’re doing.

“DeJoy — who, because there’s actually no limit to how cartoonish this gets, has a multimillion-dollar stake in USPS-competitor XPO — has defended his changes as a way to maximise the public service’s profits. But they might stop deliberately removing sorting machines and ripping up mailboxes, which is nice“.

Dejoy and the USPS upper management were all replaced by Trump directly or indirectly, only stoped taking out mail sorting machines and letter boxes because they started doing it earlier than people realised and the damage is now almost complete.

It’s not that easy to discount The Atlantic, however a simple put down appeals.
