USA via NAN with FJ

are you compromising big time on travel ? safety and comfort/level of service? or its quite comparable?

Travel time about 3hrs 40mins to NAN ex SYD, and about 10hrs NAN-LAX, so slightly longer including the the transit time, but on the other hand just breaks up the flight rather than a direct LAX flight.
Safety, recently there was a air pressure incident with the plane landing safely, but can't recall many other incidents (perhaps they aren't highlighted compared to QF)
Comfort level in J, yes they are only the reclining seats but enough pitch, legroom to make things comfortable.
Have only heard positives in terms of friendliness of Cabin Crew.

Who does OZ LAX return for $3500 in J apart from Air Pacific.

CX is about AUD3200.00 return TPE/HKG/LAX/HKG/TPE which may or may not suit.

I read the fare conditions for the FJ Biz Saver fare & while there isn't anything about having to book a certain time in advance or pay within a particular time frame you can't do a booking online without having to advise credit card details so it would appear booking & payment has to be done at the same time.

Has anyone booked a Biz Saver fare over the phone? If so, what was the deadline for payment and ticketing & did you call FJ reservations in Fiji?

I see CX in J HKG/LAX/HKG is AUD$5800 yet as you say from TPE its $3200 wierd.

What is shortest flight to TPE from OZ?

Recon CX would allow a stopover in HKG?.

I've been doing some searching to take advantage of the Air Pacific J deal.

However I think Qantas has now become aware of the fact we can get cheap J to the USA this way...

I've not been able to find this cheap fare on the Qantas Fiji site for next year. FJ site still has it but not QF.

Looks like they have found us out! I've taken advantage of this for many years now to keep status...

Might just have to book via the FJ site and accept I won't be getting as many points (but at least the status credits remain the same).

Switch it around. You should get QFF points but no status credits if booking via FJ (ie no QF flight number).

FJ gets you both SCs and miles, just not with the bonuses normally applicable to status miles.

I would have thought so, however when I read the conditions of the Business Saver fare it said "stopovers not permitted". You could probably overnight in HKG en-route from TPE to LAX assuming that CX recognise the standard IATA definition of a stopover being under 24 hours. You may only be able to book it as an immediate same day connection then call up CX & ask to move the TPE/HKG to the day prior (still observing the 24 hour rule).

If CX do allow an overnight transit you could fly into TPE on your positioning flight then fly back out on the TPE/HKG leg the same day before overnighting in HKG as HKG/LAX is enough flying for one day IMHO.

I've had three variants of the business saver fares...
  • no stopovers permitted
  • no stopovers on the outbound leg (but permitted on the inbound)
  • one stopover permitted USD100
