The Air Pacific web site shows a 747 flying SYD-NAN and NAN-SYD on some days. There's 28 x J seats there.
Edit: Beaten to it
Ahh fair enough, seems I have the day it is a 737. :-|

Who does OZ LAX return for $3500 in J apart from Air Pacific.
CX is about AUD3200.00 return TPE/HKG/LAX/HKG/TPE which may or may not suit.
Might just have to book via the FJ site and accept I won't be getting as many points (but at least the status credits remain the same).
Switch it around. You should get QFF points but no status credits if booking via F (ie no QF flight number).
I see CX in J HKG/LAX/HKG is AUD$5800 yet as you say from TPE its $3200 wierd.
What is shortest flight to TPE from OZ?
Recon CX would allow a stopover in HKG?.
I would have thought so, however when I read the conditions of the Business Saver fare it said "stopovers not permitted". You could probably overnight in HKG en-route from TPE to LAX assuming that CX recognise the standard IATA definition of a stopover being under 24 hours. You may only be able to book it as an immediate same day connection then call up CX & ask to move the TPE/HKG to the day prior (still observing the 24 hour rule).

If CX do allow an overnight transit you could fly into TPE on your positioning flight then fly back out on the TPE/HKG leg the same day before overnighting in HKG as HKG/LAX is enough flying for one day IMHO.
