I have a $450 Qantas Flight Voucher which i received when i signed up for my Qantas Amex Card

Has anyone been able to use these vouchers ?

Every time i try to use it, the cost of the flights after the voucher are more expensive than if i just book the flights on my Qantas Account.

EG; i book flights on Qantas.com to LHR, and pay $ 5,932. I try and redeem the voucher and the same flights are $ 6391, less the $450 voucher, = $ 5,941

This seems very poor, has anyone managed to redeem them for value ?

Nigel

I can usually get the same price on the Amex Travel website for a flight as compared to the QF website direct.

However, Amex don’t necessarily have access to all of the QF seat inventory so there can be occasions when a cheaper fare bucket is not accessible by Amex but is by QF - this isn’t peculiar to Amex, this can be with any travel agent. It can be particularly prevalent if you are booking at short notice or on flights that are heavily booked.

Hi Kerrodt i am talking about a qantas flight voucher that i am sue has to be redeemed on the qantas website. you bring up the voucher then search for your flights. N

Aah ok. Apologies. I thought you were referring to the Qantas flight credit that attaches to some Qantas credit cards - like the QF Amex cards etc.

tbh the subject may be misleading as some Amex cards, like the Amex Ultimate come with a $450 credit one can use on purchases via Amex travel portal. I too thought this was what you were referring to (since you mentioned Amex) however then you mention a "flight voucher" that has to be redeemed on the QF website - this sounds like a flight credit. Which is it?

If it's a flight credit as the result of a cancelled booking from QF< then it has nothing to do with Amex, and these flight credits usually require an equal or higher priced fare for the booking (plus any other stipulations of the cancelled flight fare conditions). So yes, you may well see cheaper options on the QF website. It's outlined in the conditions of the flight credit.

There is confusion here.

What Amex signup provides a $450 Qantas voucher as distnict from a $450 credit that can be redeemed via Amex travel?
To clarify. this is a $450 Qantas flight voucher that i received when i signed up for the American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card. and it is redeemed via the Qantas website. N

Thankyou - I guess this was a special promotion. Certainly no one else here has came across such.

It appears it is a bit more restrictive than a standard Gift voucher.

Are you able post the terms and conditions attached to the voucher?

Yes i am searching for it now. It looks like it was a special promotion, so i cant find the T&C's. It is certainly a scam tho, as there is no way to use the voucher unless you pay more for the tickets. Do you think it is worth calling Qantas about this, or i just have to forget about it ? I am still getting emails from Qantas reminding me not to forget to use the voucher before it expires in october 2023 !

Have you tried something other than the specific LHR flight that you mentioned in your first post to see if the results are similar (in that you get a higher price on the voucher search vs. the voucher-free search)?

Try either another dummy date or some completely separate route that has high capacity - like SYD-MEL etc.

Are there any other T&C's attached to the voucher apart from what you have (i.e. asterisks, numbers etc in very fine print either attached to the voucher or the documentation/email etc that was attached with the original offer that you accepted)? I am wondering if there is a restriction on what fare classes the voucher can be used on (e.g. cannot be used on a sale fare etc).

Yes Kerrodt ive been trying to use the voucher many times. I just spoke to Qantas, they have given me an explanation. They have said that because im booking flights using my business reward account, i get a discount. whereas when i try to use the voucher, it is applied to flights at full value, hence why they are still more expensive.

i understand this, but the $450 travel voucher offer was on taking out an Amex Qantas Business rewards credit card, so of course i am going to book flights using my business rewards account !

Wow! That's a bonkers explanation from QF.

Maybe use the voucher on a lesser value flight as the $ impact of the discount will be less (i.e. a 5% discount on a $6,000 fare will be a lot more than a 5% discount on a $500 fare, making the use of the voucher a viable solution when you then use the voucher and get a 0% discount on that same $500 fare).

yes good point ! altho i tend to get all my lesser value flights on air miles anyway !
Do you think i have any way of complaining either to Qantas or to Amex ?

That is a strange explanation from Qantas. (Unless your normally fly the more expensive Flex Fares.) I am a Business Rewards member and only get discounts on Flex or Business class fares but not on the cheaper fares. (With that I rarely purchase using Business Rewards Discount.)

I note there is an asterisk in your paste into the post. Is there any footnote anywhere that this may point to?

Thanks Serfty, sorry i cant see an asterisk, and if its there i didnt mean to paste it. i normally book Prem economy fares that are the lowest on the website, so yesterday i booked Premium Economy MEL to LHR, it is Saver (R) going and Flex (W) coming back. does that help ? N

I think it wouldn't hurt to point out to them the anomaly here that they have created by preventing you from using the voucher through your Business Rewards account and forcing you to use the standard consumer voucher redemption portal and losing the value of the voucher in the process.

I suspect that the underlying issue is probably IT related in that the voucher redemption technology solution does not contemplate a Business Rewards member wanting to use a voucher to make a booking and therefore it doesn't incorporate that into the process at all and just assumes that it is a stick standard consumer booking.

yes good point. but who is at fault here, is it Qantas or Amex ? N

If (a) QF have offered you the voucher as an incentive for taking up the card and (v) the voucher is issued by QF, and (c) it is QF technology that won't allow you book a ticket through the voucher redemption process and capture the value of the voucher as a Business Rewards customer - then I would say that QF is at fault.

However, if (a) Amex have offered you the voucher as an incentive for taking up the card and (b) and (c) remain the same as above then there could be a case to support it being the fault of Amex as Amex should have determined with QF that a Business Rewards customer could in fact redeem the voucher using their Business Rewards credentials and capture the value of the voucher in all circumstances.

There's probably many other factors to consider here. But there's enough for QF and Amex to point the finger at each other and nobody accepts any fault and you just run around in circles.

Is this the deal that you applied for ??

Business owners can receive 160,000 bonus Qantas Points plus a $450 Qantas Flight Voucher when you apply via our website by 31 July 2022,

This has a link to this site.
Then - it has a this
You’ll receive 100,000 bonus Qantas Points when you apply online via our partner link ,

The partner link goes to AMEX.

If so - I would gather that you can only use the AMEX TRAVEL site for the usage of that voucher. Search for QF flights, and compare the prices/flights there - and then use that voucher.
