VA 777 - best seats

Thanks for the info - never traveled further back on these than row 11 - row 10 is something in the current configuration I never want to experience again.

Other than that it has been row 5.;)

So row 20 and my 6' (182cm) should be fine? I'm OK sleeping in economy.

OK cool, thanks for the suggestions... I'm 180cm but taller than I am wide, reckon I will give row 20 a go!

I think a while back the advice was to not select your seats online yourself, because you'll never get a shadow (even if it otherwise would've been available). Is that still true? What's the best way to actually request row 20?

I am not sure if row 20 will be available to you in line (even if WP). I am WP and always phone up to make sure I get row 20.

It's available online as a platinum. I don't know about getting a shadow by calling. Please give it a try and let me know if it works! I doubt it, but I could be wrong!

have a good trip.

Row 20 is available to platinums online at the time of booking.

Shadows cannot be requested by calling the Guest Centre. They are just either figments of someone's imagination - that the empty seat next to them must be a benefit bestowed on them by the airline due to their status. Maybe yes Maybe no. This then gets promoted in these forums and eventually by Chinese Whispers transformed into something that can be requested by calling a number. If you are lucky you may get one if not, well back to reality. Who knows whether seat selection in advance really elevates the possibility of a shadow. I dont think the airline airport agents really know when you selected your seat. In any case seat selection is a request only and can be changed at any time for operational reason including after boarding.

well I had a peachy time down the back in 46G with spare seats!!! Actually it wasn't bad at all for a 13 hour overnighter

Since I have never travelled on VA 777 back of row 11, how much do VA charge for exit row seating?

Hmmm ... $150 each way ...

I note that 20ABC DFG are not showing on E/F.

Do they exist?

Yes, they exist but are blocked from allocation.

20H was available on the two flights.

I would prefer a D or G seat - do any have experience as to when they may become available for WP?

where is the seatmap of the new 777 config when you need one
Here's what E/F shows:

I think it does not exist in the new 777 config.

There are no physical seats in 1K, 7DGK, 11DGK, 25ABC HJK are missing according the EF map

Looking at our next Va777 booking and indeed in the J cabin there is no seat in 1K, 7DGK and 11DGK

So for the purposes of this thread Row 20 is limited to HJK and Row 25 is limited to DFG. The new bulkhead appears to be in front of 21 ABCDFG and 20HJK. Im not sure whats behind 24ABCHJK. 26ABCHJk seems to be an exit row. Maybe toilets are behind 24ABCHJK

Serfty I would suggest then 21DG

So you're saying I should take no notice of this: http://www.virginaustralia.com/au/en/experience/on-board-the-flight/seat-maps/

yes and no.
Depends on the aircraft operating your flight. As you know VA is refurbishing their 777 so the seat map is going to change for the aircraft that are already refurbished.

Just have a look at your online seat map selection via the Virgin australia website (assuming you purchased the tickets from Virgin and not travel agents).
If there is no row 20ABCDFG then its the new config which has not yet been updated into the Virgin website.

There is a picture of the new config seatmap but its somewhere in AFF. I dont remember which thread and frustratingly i cant find it

Edit: Here it is. There is no picture of whats behind Row 22.

But heres the sweetener. VA did say there would be 42 seats of "economy plus"
http://www.ausbt.com.au/virgin-australia-pushes-back-boeing-777-upgrade-to-2016
This would be the rows 21-24, 20HJK and 25DFG. This is supposed to be a bit more leg room. Which is why the double seat 25AC and 25HK from the old config have been removed. The toilets behind row 25DFG in the old config might have been moved to behind the new premium cabin in the new config - infront of row 20

I can see these seats being subject to some kind of higher fare or seat surcharge or available to status passenger first until closer to the flight. So now New config Row 20 is closer to the toilets whereas old config Row 25 was closest to the toilets.

And according to Expertflyer.com everything from Row 26 to the rear is the same

Thanks Quickstatus. As a non-status pax who booked one of the recent deep discount fares, I can't get an online seat map. In any case, my chances of getting any choice are virtually nil anyway. So I guess I'll wait until the day of travel to see which config I end up with.

VA1 SYD-LAX 27Mar
VA2 LAX-SYD 02 Apr

Your flights are both the old config 777

If sitting together
Outbound 20HJK is available
Inbound 25DFG is available though you could also do as previously suggested 25ACD or 25 DFG or 25 GHK with aisle between C and D and G and H - and these seats are available on the inbound.

I think 40DFG is not an exit row just a bulkhead. If so then 40FG is available on the inbound for 1 adult and child and add to it 39H for the other adult Halliday which is an exit row
