VA 830 Sydney to Melbourne, total incompetence!

He does fly VA, though I don't know why :), so in your words his experience is actually relevant as well.

People who make sweeping assumptions in their comments are hardly contributing much to the conversation I'd say as well...

I'm making no assumptions, i'm merely quoting his own statements in this thread and elsewhere.

Crikey what a crazy thread. I have had many minor screw ups with gates and timing and announcements and boards over the years especially with QF at SYD on Friday afternoons.

Just a few years ago QF failed to update their website or notify passengers of a 5 hour delay on a flight out of SIN, many grumpy people at Changi airport being told by the checkin staff "gee the airline should have contacted you, this delay was known about over 5 hours ago due to the late departures of several incoming aircraft". And me a WP and all. But yes VA need to improve their systems which are vague at times. I think that the OP's complaints whilst partially valid are somewhat OTT.

VA are open that the FIDs are not reliable and out of their control. Consequently, if I am subject to a delay (and despite numerous sectors, happens only rarely) then I simply open the VA webpage on my phone and keep an eye on the flight status from there as they do control that and it is up to date.

Not sure how people say the VA FIDS are out of control. QF only own the Sydney terminal AFAIK, at all others they lease. Yet in BNE they use their own monitors and have indeed finally replaced the old TV s with new monitor screens just outside the QPub

QF lease the entire terminal at most other cities and have their own FIDs, other airlines leases are by gate or terminal portion only.

Selling or selling back the leases is one of the mooted QF emergency fund raising options mooted in AJs review. Will be interesting to see if it makes any difference.

They need to look at what they are going to do with a replacement jet base, given its due to be handed back as land only in 5 years.

Tripit Pro uses flightstats and if that is not updated then you can miss a flight. (Would have happened to me if I had trusted Tripit while doing the 30 day free trial, cancelled after that as my personal data gathering resources are more reliable.)

Well, yes; anyone who relies solely on an application on a phone is a mug (and I'm not meaning you there serfty :) ) I and anyone should keep tabs on what the airline is saying and doing. If TripIt says there's a 3 hour delay (for instance) , no way would I go away from the lounge / departures area until the airline confirms such.

But as an early 'heads up' for a delay etc, its been great for me (touch wood). And like I said, really good for early connection info without having to de-plane and then find and figure out what's happening on FIDs.

Twice I've been able to secure a changed flight overseas when my original one was much delayed or cancelled the evening before because I got an early SMS from TripIt (and nothing from the airline - LH and BA I'm looking at you). No doubt those who acted only the next morning or when they got to the airport found it much harder to secure alternative seats.

You should probably read more carefully obviously.

Back on topic - I'm just used to VA's hopeless FID system now I think - they truly do not give a flying F* about it, I too have also complained and complained.

I just get to the gate early and sit in their horrid dirty gate lounges wishing I was on another airline :(
