VA cracking down on carry on 7kg limit

Have another one to add to this as far as work-arounds go.
Was flying QF to Sydney today, and wanted a wheeled carry-on for a 3-day stint, so went into the wardrobe and “borrowed” Mrs wrcmad’s carry-on bag. Looked at a very worn and wrinkled JQ weight tag attached to handle and was just about to remove it when I heard a shriek not to remove it!
“What is the problem!” I asked?
She told me has has not removed the weight tag for 18 months so she never has to get her bag weighed.... ever!

It would make more sense to enforce size over weight, especially on the F100 flights. I've had my bag weighed 6 times in the last fortnight as far away as KTA.

VA weighed my bag on the way to SYD on Saturday. Said it "looks" too heavy. It was 10kg. Luckily this time I didn't really care either way just wanted to not have the hassle of waiting on baggage. Didn't bother trying to carry it on the way back, just checked it in like normal. Will be interesting to see if this is common. Also, premium entry was closed in BNE so I'll be interested what happens when I try to check in there instead, they may just let it through?

BNE premium entry only open Mon-Fri

So is this still occurring.

Start at Premium Lounge seems insane to me.

Status has almost NO perks left at VA..

10KG seems savvy to me.

I saw a really nice small wheelie case the other day, which would suit me right down to the ground ... until I saw it's weight, 3.2kg. Just won't work with 7kg limit I'm afraid. 10kg limit would be great and workable for many of us, I'd assume.

A agree. When a maximum allowed size carry-on is packed full, IME it weighs about 10kg. It's simply a more realistic weight limit for the bag size. Especially considering the bag itself is likely to weigh around 3kg.

I wonder if AFF could play a part in advocating for a higher limit. Many carriers used to have 10kg limit, so I assume it's easy to go back to that (no legal impediments or genuine safety concerns) and perhaps simultaneously lobby for a crackdown on carry on size (which in my estimation, causes far more issues of real concern)?

That's wrong. Even Air Asia, 3K/JQ etc let me get away with 7.8kg/7.9kg carry-on.

I don’t know what JQ limit is, but I’ve seen the dreaded scales of death out a lot at JQ boarding gates and lots of people fined for being even 100g over their limit!

Yes they were weighing in BNE last week.

I was thinking maybe they have identified their premium pax as the worst offenders and thus have started there....? I saw someone ahead of me have their bag taken to be checked but at least they aren’t fining people yet!

At least they're not made to walk around to the regular checkin counters to check the bag in!

They are being complete idiots to do this. Especially with no notice it is going to occur.

Plat and Gold members get all KINDS of benefits that the once year Clampett flyers on $70 tickets do not get.

Who CARES if they get 10 kilos? The same way we get to choose row #3 at no cost, and check in free bags on any fare, and use the lounges, and board first - they are just a few very small perks in return for giving VA a ton of money each year.

Elites get 10 kilos, Clampetts get 5 or 7 - how hard is that to sort out there?

I do not recall seeing weigh checks at Virgin Domestic gates - are they doing that more and if not why bother with the Premium Lounge passengers?

I think it's 7kgs. They've weighed my bag at check-in and as long as it's not 8kgs and over it has been ok.

That’s actually the point isn’t it.

Getting away with it is breaking the rules which, as per another thread, is inappropriate.

That’s quite different to whether the rules themselves are appropriate or not. (... and I agree that 10kg would be better)

Sydney domestic on Monday afternoon - at the gate for my flight, the agent was randomly picking / weighing peoples carryon on scales at empty gate next door. Noticed with about 4-5 peoples carryons and one person had to rejig things in carryons for her group.

QF were very strict on this at MEL even though I was checking in for international J. SYD domestic also forced me to gate check due to the carry on not neatly fitting into the standard dimensions box thing they have.
