Velocity and Optus Partnership

Almost as un-competitive as Telstra on price, but really no better network coverage that Vodaphone or other smaller mobile carriers, worst of both worlds. But for English Premier League fans you do get to see EPL live. By being on an Optus contract you're essentially paying the EPL tax unless you want to watch EPL.

A few reasonable deals to be had depending on what you value Virgin points. Below I've just said they're worth 1c each for simplicity sake but I try to get around 4c per more out of them.

A $15 5GB no contact mobile broadband plan comes with 3000 points (which I'd say are worth more than $30).

The plans don't make a lot of sense but if you're willing to start a contract and then cancel it a few months later + even sell the phone then it could work out. Optus postpaid plans (excluding sim only) don't have a cancelation fee instead they just charge the fee for the remainder of the device. Purchasing the cheapest handset, a Samsung Galaxy A50 on the largest $125 plan would net 40,000 points (worth at least $400). You currently get the first 3 months free and then canceling would be the remaining 21 months x $21 (the device fee) = $441 total fee to cancel. For $441 you've just got your self a new Samsung phone (which you could sell online for a few hundred dollars) and 40,000 points enough for a Brisbane to Sydney return trip in Business Class.

It's similar to when Qantas and Vodafone was running a promo where purchasing the cheapest phone on a plan netted a 40,000 QFF points - 40,000 QFF points for $74?

I thought Optus had gone the way of the dodo. Just goes to show how much advertising (or lack thereof) they are doing these days.

And with that train of thought - who is holding who up? Virgin supporting Optus or Optus supporting Virgin?

We are still with Virgin Mobile (until they shut in May). (It's really Optus)

2 points per dollar, $30 sim only plan with 5GB data, sharing and rollover with two other phones on the account making data a non issue.

Looks like Velocity earn with Virgin Mobile has been extended until June 2020 (previously October 2019):

Anyone noticed any VFF offers for business plans?

I looked and didn't see any

I am in the market for a new iPhone soon, but I'd prefer to stay with Telstra.

Just trying to work out if this works out to be similar to buying the phone outright from the Mac store vs if I sign up and then cancel the contract?

Has anyone done the sums?

I'm super pissed about this. I decided to swap to Optus earlier last month because I knew it was ending October 2019, now it's extended!!

Not a bad idea considering the $ per point paid. Im wondering if there is a limit(could not find any info)how many data sims you are able to sign up for and if each time you get the 3,000 points. Even if you were able to sign up to 10 that's $150 outlay for 30,000 points which i would consider a pretty good deal.

I did find this on the Velocity website
Q: How many times can I receive Velocity Points?
A: The Velocity Points can be received once per activated eligible Optus service via the Points Earning Website

I'm going to guess it's a limit of one per person but you'd never know. If you do decide to do it just make sure it's possible. It's also not great for credit scores when you open and close many mobile phone services quickly but a single service wouldn't hurt.

Would a credit check even be completed on a month-to-month plan? I’d be willing to sign up and cancel a few times and use the data in the meantime but don’t want to blacklist myself from Optus or damage my credit rating over something like this. $15 for 3000 points sounds pretty good.

Finally asked my account manager. Nothing for business accounts yet but lots of complaints from other business customers so let's see he said

Has anyone signed up for this and is planning on cancelling the contract and paying for the phone outright?

I’m finding it hard to work out exactly how much it will cost to do this and how it stacks up against buying a phone through Apple.
If there’s not much difference I would do this for the 40K points.

What phone are you thinking of?

If you cancel anytime before the 24 months is up then you pay the handset payment fee remaining which can normally be figured out by clicking through with the sign up process.

It was better when they had the 3 months free promo as you only had to pay for 21 months of the handset (but that ended last Sunday).
