Velocity Frequent Flyer Status Match - WOAG

Umm, did you really expect they would give you silver status forever despite not actually flying with them?

Heh, they came to me with the offer to get me on board, not the other way around (I was already a Velocity member) I fly with them when it suits me, and with increasing disenchantment with QF their chances of getting more of my business was increasing.

The match offer is not surprising given the state of public service budgets at the moment. Most have been cut back quite severely, with many offering redundancies. Travel is included in the cut backs. Had a flight to Canberra a couple of weeks ago on the other carrier and it was only about a third full.

If VA can get a little of that shrining pie by offering matches, well thats good for them.

And status credits definitely accumulate, points do not

Thanks for posting this - it looks good. I have a question re the hotel status match offer from Velocity/Virgin. If I was to do a QF match to get Velocity Platinum by 31 August, would my Hilton or IHG status match have to be selected on that day (hence apply for 12 or 6 months from that day), or can I select it anytime up to 31/8/2015 and the 12 or 6 month hotel status apply from then (which might work better for my Hilton Honours year)?

Assuming you get the offer (I believe you would), it can be activated at anytime within your specific status year.

Both IHG and Hilton run on a calendar year, so you will get more than 12 months in theory (there has been the odd report of some getting dropped by IHG on Jan 1), Hilton benefits expire March 31, invoking the benefit now will maximise the return as your bee fits will expire March31 2016. Hilton Diamond leaves IHG Plat for dead re the benefits.

I am sure the offer they came to you with was for a 12 month status match that would be extended if you requalified.

I am Lifetime Silver with Qantas. Virgin's status match was initially limited to 12 months, then extended for a further 12 after a lengthy exchange between us. Now about to be withdrawn completely.

What was the T&Cs for the respective SM?

I assume it was stated that it was a 12 month SM, if not than it's a shortfall with VFFs offer wording but I can't see VFF offering a lifetime status match as they just don't have such a thing (as far as I know). They do have a paid lifetime lounge membership for circa $9k, but I'm not aware of any reports of them giving that away.

Seems the expectation of the offer was a bit high.

I applied and got pushed from Red to Gold.

Will actually come in handy. Once I've hit Gold again with QF I'll likely split my flying between VA and QF (especially for a few leisure trips coming up) based on price/schedule as opposed to booking almost exclusively on QF.

This worked out very well for us. My wife got the status match offer on (I think) 16 June and applied pretty much immediately. It took a few days to come through - maybe because her employer was one of the really big Aust Govt agencies and they got a lot of responses. Anyway it took her from Silver to Platinum - I have only maintained Gold this year with Virgin through family pooling, so we would almost certainly not get there otherwise.

The timing was even better. Friday 27 June was her very last day as a government employee, so if it was a couple of weeks later she would have missed out.

Did mine last week and received an email informing me that I have gone from a red to platinum velocity FF. Timely for me considering the demise of MASA's and a chance to see how Virgin looks after their top tier members. If all goes well I may shift to the other side!

Don't go expecting too much... I've just dropped to SG... and absolutely no difference.

I think because of all these status match programs there is too many elites flying with VA and therefore they don't card about looking after BIS clients.

I'm viewing it as a bonus to try out some of their network and perks. I'm heading to NZ next Feb and was eyeing off a pacific trip so may come in handy for lounge access. Duly noted though!

In my opinion there is hardly any difference between VA Platinum and Gold.

And Gold is nice to have but isn't that great either. It will be interesting to see whether I make it to Gold next year as I have planned less VA flights. Perhaps a double SC offer will change my mind. ;)

Well if it wasn't hard enough to get row 3 in/out of CBR already! Bad enough on QF with all of the CLs devaluing us Plats now half the Embraer or ATR72 will be matched WPs.

At least the Govt Best Fare rule should mean that J wont be full of WP upgraders!

#grumble #IDidTheMiles :)

Just discovered this! Must've been living under a rock. Will have to do this!! There may not be much difference between SG and WP but WP still beats SG! ;)

Just read through the whole thread. Might not get SM'd but there's no harm in trying! :p

*sigh* Got my rejection email 3 hours after sending them an email. :(
Oh well... It was worth a try. ;)
