Why is there a need for beds on domestic flights?
I can only think of the red eye flights that would have a need for them.

Good for the customer but overkill IMHO.

The reason QF 'needs' them is because DJ has them, it's fabulous and it wipes the floor with the 2-3-2 chairs.

Personally I'd be happy with 2-2-2 on them.. skybeds except for a red-eye are overkill. I'd rather a top notch inflight meal and service.

They still don't need beds. It doesn't make sense to for flights of that length unless it is a PER-SYD/BNE red eye

What I do agree is that 2-3-2 isn't the answer either.

Imo DJ went beds because they knew if they crammed the J cabin they wouldn't fill it. So make it more spacious and try and fill less seats...ticks multiple boxes for them

Which is what anecdotes indicate VA consistently provide on their 332's ...
Absolutely.

From a choice of entrees, to a side salad served with the mains and a cointreau after the meal... there are just so many ways that Virgin is a notch better than QF coast to coast, even before we look at DJ's 60" seat pitch.

Unless QF have changed I had exactly that on my last J flight from PER, except they had the sticky instead of the Cointreau..

Well then has QF upgraded its service to match Virgin's?

I have not flown QF to/from PER for more than 10 months, I mean why pay more to fly second best... But the last time I did fly QF, there was no choice of entree, it was a set item (DJ has a choice of two on the lunch/dinner menu). And on QF there was no separate side salad served with the main meal. Of course a dessert wine is also offered on DJ, but there is cointreau as well, long time since QF enhanced that off the domestic J menu!

Is QF also returning jackets in a jacket bag at the end of the flight? Or starting the flight with glass of champagne while still on the ground? They're yet more of the nice touches that Virgin offers. :)

As of a day or so ago, still no choice of entree. # main course choices, one of which is a salad.

I fear that QF will continue to do only what they think they can get away with, whether it's seating or catering. That may work for them in the short term but will see the continuing slow bleed.

Thanks for that codash1099, I didn't think Qantas had upped their game to the same standard as Virgin... Perhaps the confusion is between the salad as a main meal option, as opposed to a side salad as an additional item to compliment the main meal option. (Or maybe the set Qantas entree at the moment is some sort of salad like dish, served prior to the main meal rather than with it, again this might be confusing the lower Qantas menu standards with the superior offer from Virgin coast to coast.) :?: (IIRC Qantas transcon J lost the side salad at the same time as they introduced the entree (quite a few years back), really just seemed like they swapped out the salad for a soup at the time. Would be happy to hear if they have reintroduced it though on some services, and kept the entree as well, as nlagalle suggests?)

Anyway, will be interesting to see if Qantas have kept their J seating arrangements (on this new aircraft) at the same squeeze as Jetstar international, rather than upgrading to match Virgin domestic's 60" pitch.

My understanding of the rationale behind the 42J configuration on the later built A332 is that it would allow JQ/QF to 'swap' planes easily (a new paint job is all that is needed). I believe the initial plan is for JQ to take EBO and EBP but I guess a change in plan saw JQ took EBJ and EBK (which was and still is in the 38J configuration).

If JQ received their 787s on time, QF would have all the A332s back in its fleet (to ply domestic routes) and the 763s would have been long gone by now.

JB mentioned a while ago that A332s may be used for routes to Asia so I believe it is wise for them to fit them with a good long-haul product rather than reconfiguring the fleet later.

So are you saying the seat pitch on QF business class on these aircraft is the same as Jetstar "business max" or whatever they call it?

Yes it is. The layout for the 330's EBO onwards is the same for both JQ and QF.

This is the product in Jetstar colours - 6 rows, 7 across =42 seats (Qantas domestic just block-out the middle seat and make some trim changes to the furnishings.)

It can be compared to the exact same front cabin, on the exact same model of aircraft flown by Virgin domestically - 4 rows, 6 across = 24 seats (pictured below is the newest DJ A330 config, on the older of DJ's A330s, there are 3 extra seats in total, in the middle of rows 2, 3 & 4)

Which is why there is such interest in what the new aircraft's interior configuration will be!

DJ have upped the game. What amazes me is QF are running business as usual. The food and service is as if there was no DJ on coast to coast.

Yet the QF cabin is full. Clearly QFF points are gold to members!

There you go - full cabin. You would be nuts to reduce capacity from 36 (what it should be) down to 24.

I do find it interesting that people do leave out the EBM/N cabin, and the old EK cabins, as they do form a good part of the respective 330 fleets.

I have no issue with the EK cabins - as nlagelle indicated, you don't really need a sleeper for the route.

For me it's the top-notch service and soft product on VA 332's that is generally far better and more consistent than that provided by QF on it's 330's/744.

That is not the point.

If we are talking 330 cabins (more specifically Domestic 330 cabins), why not include each product considering that they account for close to half of the fleet for each airline.
