It made me to abandon Chrome and starting to use another browser as the tenacity of the adds made it practically unusable.

Yea, as an AFF Supporter you shouldn't be seeing these (or any) ads. I'll be reporting this as a problem to our ad partner and will hopefully be fixed soon. Apologies for this.

I'm on a windows laptop but have disappeared for the last hour or so

I also have the same pop up repeatedly appearing. Seems to through its 15 second advertisement, wait 5 seconds and reappear.

Got the ads popping up too! Seems to have gone when I put my Ad Blockers on for this site and refreshed the page.
