Vinomofo Wine Deals

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

So my Glenlofty Cabernet turned up today and being the patient guy I am I cracked one this evening. Here are my first impressions. Deep red with a lightly perfumed but predominantly oaky nose. Medium bodied palate, some berries in the mix but with some seriously grippy, drying tannins. Would not be everyone's cup of tea with those tannins (pun intended). I think this wine needs time in the bottle and even then I wonder if the fruit will ever be enough to come to the fore, or if it will fade away before the tannins adequately soften. Lets see what a couple of hours open does to the wine.

I am guessing Thousand Candles. Sounds like a very interesting wine if that is the one.

It is the Thousand Candles, the score/TN are from Tyson Stelzer, not James Halliday.
If you are a subscriber to the Wine Front, there is a long thread about this wine there, with a score of 88pts and the reviewer not interested in buying even at $35.

Thanks for that. I've only seen the Halliday and a bit more through Google searches. A divisive one it seems.

From what I have witnessed in the past anything that has huge discount like this was never remotely worth the RRP and in most cases (pun intended) still not that good a value at the hugely discounted price.

I am intrigued to try one, but there is no way I am going to pay $210 plus delivery to try it! The punters on Vivino have given an average score of 3.6, which is not bad, but most are all saying it will divide opinion. Anybody had some?

Wozza...money burning a hole in yo pocket? Pass on this one and go and buy a couple of Euphoniums....now, the yarra valley chardy has me interested, not to buy, but the speel. Sounds very like the red from last week, I think a shiraz, that talked about a talented young winemaker, blah,blah.....maybe another unknown one again. Not a bad thing, and as I have found out, gems that you don't always notice are still sitting there...

Fascinating. I'd never heard of that. I'd pay $10 for tasting glass of such a thing. Not sure I'd take a punt on a whole bottle, let alone a six pack, even at this price. Obviously a divisive style, as Campbell Mattinson (who of course nowadays seems to himself be providing a good portion of the new reviews on the Halliday site) reviewed it a lot less favourably here: Thousand Candles 2011 | The Wine Front ... If I wanted to try an oddball wine on VM right now, I'd probably conclude I might as well go with that (presumed to be Chalmers) Italian Red Blend...

Yeah, I'm confident it's the Montevecchio Rosso. I got a dozen of the 2012, something a little different and a very good quaffer / food wine for the price, but it was rated 94 by JH; I haven't seen any reviews of the 2013.

Just discovered my work colleague has jumped on the Thousand Candles 2011, so I am going to buy one from him - I am intrigued. One of the expert Vivino reviewers said:

"On the surface this is a weird wine - shiraz, pinot noir and sauvignon blanc blend. Very closed it slowly opens up changing its character often over several hours, which is interesting in itself. It is earthy and spicy, combining eventually to a beautiful bouquet. There are many flavours to find, rose water seems to prevail. It will divide opinion whether considering taste or price."

That description alone makes it sound a pretty interesting wine experience. I will report back on the bottle I try ...

~"rose water seems to prevail"
with only 12.5% alcohol...they might be right...lol

Night 2 of the Glenlofty Cabernet and it has mellowed somewhat. The tannins have subsided but the fruit has largely too, as predicted. It is not that it is a bad wine and for under $8 it is again a bargain, it's just not to my preferred taste. I think they could have toned down the oak slightly and made a really good medium bodied cabernet. For a few cents more, I would get on the Jeanneret Westward We Went Cabernet Malbec 2013 if it appears again. A far superior wine in my opinion.

+1 to the Westward we went - a great cab blend for the price paid.

+2 !

They are both good for the price, but I agree, the oak is too dominant on the GL (I think I said it was a bit green at the end). The Westward is much more balanced - what a great wine for the price.

And, as I write this, I drink the Bayliss Road Cab Sauv 14. It's got a bit too much oak too, second night, so it's in the same camp as the GL. Still lovely to drink though - just a bit bitter and dry at the end of the palate.

Can't justify the price asked. Too big a risk given some previous highly discounted VM failures.
