I almost bought a case of the GSM the other day from the broker. Need a self imposed ban from ordering any more wine so I said no to it, even though that should be a great drop.
My salvation case arrived today. It's a real mixed bag...
2012 Thousand candles is in there as the flagship, what was surprising was what made up the other 11, got a bottle of the Mule, A sandalford shiraz, plus I got a few whites which is good because I never seem to buy whites in large quantities. All in all happy with the $120 spend.

Opened my 2012 Thousand Candles the other night. First mistake was assuming it was a Shiraz blend - one sip quickly corrected me.

It's definitely different and unusual. Whilst nicely made, it's not something I'd pay $45/bottle for, let alone the original $100/bottle asking price. Maybe if my palate was more sophisticated, and I had exposure to a wider range of grapes, but for mine, this is just a bit too weird and unusual. It certainly wasn't going with what I was eating (again, my mistake re the blend). It didn't seem to survive well into the second night, so I tipped the remained down the sink.

FWIW, the $40 RRP is a bit of a joke - you can get it for free on QF Business. No doubt they are paying Haselgrove closer to $10 a bottle. That said, it is tempting at the VM price.

Of course they are getting it for around $10 a bottle, you don't think they buy it in for $14.50 only to sell it for the same out of the goodness of their heart.... I wouldn't be shocked if it was closer to $7-8 a bottle to them

All RRPs are just that - RRPs. Even Grange doesn't sell for the ~$800 that Penfolds quotes. Just walk into Dan Murphys to see what RRPs mean - some number at least 20% more than what wine actually sells for. I thought we all knew that?

I took a case of this last time round after really enjoying one of the earlier vintages. Whilst by no means being a bad wine (IMO) I was a tad disappointed and underwhelmed. Tasted a little bland and didn't live up to my expectations or recollection from what I think was the 2012.

Wow...I've heard it divisive, but not heard anyone tip it down the sink!

It's funny reading the reviews online, with the reviews being so opposite I have decided to open it with the old man to taste it. I am going to get his review, being a man with 40+ years of red wine experience, and compare it against mine, being 10 years of knowledge...should be interesting.

Also taking a few others after reading your review just in case we both hate it and it ends up in the sink!

To be fair - this was on the second night. It was fine on the first night, just not what I was expecting (half my fault). It just didn't seem to survive 24+ hours being open in warm weather, and tasted degraded the following evening. Given it's trajectory, I didn't think it was going to get any better on a 3rd night! It may have fared better if I'd put it in the fridge or something.

It's the 2013 shiraz that's just been on VM. Not sure if there's another shiraz viognier in the wings (the last I have is the 2012), but I hope so!
