Not sure Vivino scores are super reliable per say (no offence to individual users), but as there isn't a confirmed empirical scale, it seems to me than 4 is about the average.
Evening Penegal. If you see a Vivino average score of 4 or more, with at least 10 ratings for a particular vintage, then it's likely to be a very good wine for its price, variety and region.
The under $40 wines are a bit more hit and miss on the scoring front, as they tend to attract a higher average score (usually high 3s). [Just guessing, but that may be because the fine wine consumers who purchase the $40 plus wines, score harder than us everyday drinker folk.]
I would say the average is around a 3.5. If I see a late 3s, then I know it's going to be a good wine. If one of the top 50 score it above a 3.5, then that's also a good indicator for me, particularly if the vintage doesn't have too many scores.
The Vivino 1-5 star scoring system is certainly more generous than the 1-100 Cellar Tracker scoring system. I have found myself adapting my scoring a little as I start to rate wines on Cellar Tracker as well as Vivino.
