Vinomofo Wine Deals

Vinomofo just sent out a VIM email about a 2013 release of a cult classic - I have done some detective work and this is the 2013 version of Thousand Candles (which has been discussed a lot previously here)

The 2013 Thousand Candles is only a 93 Halliday as opposed to 95 for the 2012 vintage. Worth the bucks?

Any ideas on the 2014 McLaren Vale shiraz rrp $75 made by a Bushing King?
I thought of Sparky Marquis but also Ulithorne.

Received my Hannah's Swing this week and cracked a bottle last night. To be perfectly honest I was underwhelmed (I'm in no way a wine connoisseur, just like what I like).

After reading through the comments it seems I missed 2 things, drinking with a meal and decanting. Planning to make these changes and try again tonight.

Can certainly say this forum is becoming more and more addictive - feels great to be a newbie at something again!

Can you elaborate on why you found it underwhelming?

As I said I'm a real novice when it comes to describing different wine characteristics. I've only recently started keeping notes on wines I really like.

The last wine I really enjoyed was from a mixed 6 pack, a Chris Ringland Shiraz. So smooth and easy to drink... I can't really describe why but to me it was superb.

The Chris Ringland style is ripe and plush, often with quite high alcohol, no aggressive tannins and relatively low acid, the Fox Gordon style is more restrained, pure-fruited but more acidic and tannic and can seem a bit thin and lean to those that prefer the lusher styles.

It's Ulithorne Unicus. RedBigot noticed that it's not been produced before.
GH I'm hoping that the Unicus was so special that they bottled it separately from the 'main' wine. I pressed the button so I will report back.
On another topic, the 2012 Houghton Cab Malbec came up momentarily on Graysonline for auction and, having received and tried, am v pleased with the $26 approx tag. It is a quality wine right now and will improve over the years I believe.

My hopes aren't quite that high. If it was so "special" they would price it higher than the regular lines, not less.
I'm mostly hoping VinoMofo have learned a lot from the Mitolo Cantiniere debacle and this isn't thrown together from leftovers as that seemed to be.

I'm hoping RB that the slightly less pricing of Unicus reflects that it is a 'one off' and therefore does not have the market presence of the Frux Frugis. But I have been impressed by their quality levels and consistency over the years; same owners and same great winemaker is a big plus in this world of today.

my whites are so depleted i am actually quaffing the last of my 01 white label rieslings.. sacrilege...

The reds are constantly reviewed discussed etc here , but the whites not so much.

Interested in suggestions for anything "wonderful" that has recently passed through the fo and might reappear.. riesling is the first priority

I hadn't tried any of the Ulithorne stuff prior to receiving the GSM, but since then I have seen it everywhere, from enjoying their Rose (one they make in France) at dinner of Otto, to their Familia shiraz which I thought was quite reasonable.

I want to take a punt on this Unicus, and I probably will if there is still some around next week after they apply a credit to my account I am owed.

Good (and tough) question, tgh.

These won't all be from the Fo and they won't all be Rieslings, but I did make a conscious effort in December last year to start buying more White Wine to broaden my spectrum of wine experiences. I am glad I did, as I have discovered that a White can be more complex than a Red if it's from a good vineyard and has been made well. I set the bar high, only going for Whites of iconic status or with a high expert score.

In no particular order, here's a few of them I would recommend:

1. Tahbilk Marsanne 2007 - it's got the famous honeysuckle going on at this 9 year point along with a JH 97 and trophy and gold at the Sydney Wine Show. Wine Culture are selling them in single bottles for under $26 a bottle. Criminal price for the quality and they have the potential to age further:

2. Tyrrell's Wines Vat 1 Semillon 2009 - if a wine could describe a bucolic Spring scene on a fine warm day in the Hunter Valley, then this would be it. It picked up a Hooke 99 (I think). Stunning wine. I picked this up in my local BWS in Lindfield, Sydney for just under $30. They were clearing them out in that recent 6 pack bundle promotion.

3. Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2015 - best SB I have had in a long time. Aromatic, dry white with citrus fruits, minerals and herbs. Recently voted best SB in the world at an international wine show. Kemneys have been shifting these for just under $19:

4. Seppelt Drumborg Riesling 2015 - young and pristine, probably with its best years ahead of it (5-10 years). JH 98. Nicks have it for just under $30:

5. Crawford River Riesling 2014 - power, elegance and length. Drinking well now, but with much more to come. JH 97. I picked mine up from MyCellars for just under $40:

2014 Crawford River Riesling, Henty - myCellars.com.au

6. Flametree SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay 2014 - best white of last year for me (2nd best for Halliday). Intense, precise with an unusual diesel undertone. Pricey at just under $50, but massively worth it. Huge potential too. [picked it up from My Cellars, but it appears to be out of stock]

7. Henschke Julius Riesling 2015 - Perfumed and mouth watering. JH 97. Just under $34 from MyCellars:

2015 Henschke Julius Riesling, Eden Valley - myCellars.com.au

8. Kalgan Iron Rock Albany Chardonnay 2013 - citrusy, tropical and with mineral undertones. My best White from mof_ last year. At $27.50 it was a good buy. [Doubt they have any left, but might be worth a call.]

9. PHI Single Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2012 - powerful fruit and creamy finish. Built to last with a strong acid line. Another mof_ purchase at $34.50 that is probably not available. De Botoli have it at $45, but it's not worth that.

My general tip would be to head to MyCellars and ignore (most of) the mof_ Whites. The MyCellars Whites are well priced, allow you to buy in singles, generally only stock the high end stuff at a fair price, and are super fast on delivery. I was buying the singles and then going back for more on the stuff that really grabbed me.
