Black Market Shiraz 2015 - Red Wine | Vinomofo Australia

Hardy's Tintara Yeenunga Shiraz

by comparison scored an 86 at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
Do we look for different things in Australia compared to Europe?

Not sure about looking for different things, but to me it seems fairly well established that many Australian reviewers are consistently more generous with their scores for Aus wines than overseas critics. A number of o/s critics have remarked on this situation.
There is also an annual festival of comment regarding perceptions of high/inflated scores when the Halliday Wine Companion is released each year. I personally tend to discount Halliday scores by 2-3 points as a matter of course for comparison to say TWF reviews and my personal assessments.

Any scoring situation involving many wines tasted in a session is inherently flawed anyway, wine show results are highly inconsistent and suspect as a wine-buying guide.

Agree with RB re trusting wine competition scores: always look for additional scores.

Re European vs. Australian scores, typically 90 in Europe is a 93-95 here (depending on the Aus reviewer). Scores tend to be much tougher over there than here.

Thanks gents, had a feeling there was a pattern here. Wondering if the converse seems to prevail as well, ie European wines marked down out here in comparison?

Frankly the Aust. wine scoring scene is a joke. Aust "critics" over state Aust wines in general and score by reputation as a matter of course. I much prefer a site like Cellar Tracker for honest opinion. It's varied as reviews should be given they are from the eyes of the beholder but its honest. Try finding an on line published poor review for a noted wine/winery from a professional.

To be brutally frank, most Australian critics are gutless sheep these days.

I tend to agree. Jeremy Oliver is one of the few who will call it like it is.

Was there any feedback from last years BM offer JaJa Barossa Shiraz 2006? From what I can tell VM have just put up the 2009 (from a VIM email)

Doesn't seem to be Hallidays cup of tea (think he rated it 89) but seems to get good comments on vivino

I suspect this is the JaJa as well.
Curiously, the standard 'Black Market' spiel about fake brands and real wines has been left off this one:

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article, absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

While I am here, a confession …..
While so many regular posters and purchasers here have been "de-vim-ed" , I remain AND have free postage.
Doesn't make any sense at all .
In my dotage , I am drinking less, buying less, becoming pickier and buying wines with clear provenance.
I have bought little from the 'fo this year .
Conceptually I remain a loyal vim.. but they mostly just don't hit my spot.
Qaz on the other hand……….

Well I've never been a VIM and these days rarely check their wines, let alone buy - if I ever visit their website now, then it's generally due to a post here or elsewhere. Whilst they probably still have the occasional great mystery bargain, I mostly can't be bothered with uncovering them myself anymore. And regarding their other (non-mystery) wines, they have a wide range and it's nice that they've increased imports, but at least with the top Australian ones that interest me, their prices are often not cheaper than elsewhere. However, from what I gather and am glad to hear, they continue to have good customer service.

If I was a VIM, having free delivery combined with their usual price-matching, then that would help bring me back into the fold, though not being able to create my own mixed packs/orders would remain a downside.

For those who are VIMs, I encourage you to post VIM deals with links, rather than make the rest of us wonder whilst you talk about them :)
