Vinomofo Wine Deals

thanks to Winefront, made my first order since 2019 - Principia Pinot Noir 2017 (JF95, GW95) - $29/bt in 6pk after $35 referral, 4.2% Cashrewards/ShopBack

I boomed on it too, like the sound of the light body (unusual for MP Pinot) and bunchy complexity, it was only 94 from GW.

Thanks Dave_Aus and RB for confirming Jim Brand Domain Cabernet. Do let us know how it tastes when you pop one open. Nothing much in the independent reviews space.
@grapes7: I am always reluctant to review wines, as I’m really hopeless at it. But here are my thoughts for what they are worth. Sam Kim reviewed the Jim Brand Domain (from the Jim Brand website, so it’s public) as follows: “Offering opulence and grace in one, this magnificent wine shows cassis, spiced cherry, vanilla, cedar and cigar notes on the nose. It’s equally impressive on the palate, displaying outstanding concentration and depth combined with silky mouthfeel and fine chalky tannins, offering impressive structure and length.” I really couldn’t detect spiced cherry etc.

What I will say is that is that this is quite a light-style wine. It’s a blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot. I couldn’t find the proportions anywhere, but it must have a fair amount of cab franc in it. Light-ish ruby/garnet colour. Delicate nose. Definitely not a fruit bomb and not heavy on the tannins. It was a little hot alcohol-wise initially, but that faded as the wine opened up, so decanting would help. I think it will improve over time, but it’s not essential.

For the price ($30), it was a very pleasant wine, definitely above a quaffer, but if I’d paid the RRP of $85, I would have been pretty disappointed. I’m happy enough with it, but it wasn’t one where I immediately went out and bought another dozen. Sam Kim gave it 96 points. There’s no way this is a 96 point wine for me. In the range of 88-90.

@David_Aus If there is one thing that I have learned in my travels on this board is not to rely on Sam Kim reviews. I actually not just ignore them, but see a red flag if the wine under consideration ONLY has a glowing Sam Kim review.
100%. In fact if you minus a Sam Kim review by 3-4 points you then have Halliday's score.

Thanks Dave_Aus. Great review.
Sounds like a decent wine but a soft Coonawarra Cab doesn't do it for me so I'll have to pass. When I go Coonawarra Cab I prefer a body slam!

I was just able to use the code VINO and get $30 off and free shipping on the amelia park, despite being pretty sure ive made orders before on the email i logged in with (definitely not a new account). Brought it down to $8 a bottle.

2020 was supposed to be a great vintage in the Great Southern region, and I've enjoyed the Amelia Park Frankland River 'Ironstone' Shiraz on two previous purchases. Wouldn't be stoked at $33 but at $10.50 (or $8) I think its a great table wine.

One thing I've noticed is that it always has benefited from 2-3 hours open before drinking.

Well, it is Thursday and I got some exclusive offerings from VM on my email.

The first is a premium example of old vine Mataro. A varietal incredibly well suited to the heat and terroir of the Barossa Valley.

Secondly we have a stunning Shiraz from a producer with an incredibly rich history and pedigree in the Barossa. If you are a lover of the Barossa, you will be stoked to see this producer's name when it arrives at your door.

1. Black Market Old-Vine Mataro 2015

96 points - James Halliday

94 points - Gary Walsh

5 Red Star Producer - James Halliday WIne Companion

This boutique producer has an incredible knack of sourcing incredible old vine fruit across the Barossa. Fruit for this wine was sourced from ancient Mataro vines, over 140 years old. The resulting wine is truly unique and complex. The wine is medium to full bodied and loaded with personality and interest. The nose is beautifully lifted and fragrant with blackberries, dried herbs and savoury tones. The palate is beautifully layered, comprising dark berries, earthy game, spice and herbal nuance. A structured wine that is now really coming into its own with 6 years of bottle age!

Down from $95 /btl to $35 in 6 packs

2. Black Market Shiraz 2018

5 Red Star Producer' James Halliday WIne Companion

From an incredibly well renowned Barossa Valley producer with an impressive pedigree in making outstanding Shiraz.

This wine harnesses the power and generosity of the Barossa fruit, allowing its purity to remain the star without overdoing it in the winery with oak and extraction.

The wine is full bodied, with a luscious, juicy palate led by impressive dark berry fruit weight, spice and anise. The finish is long, delicious and highlighted by subtle five spices.

This wine is yet to be rated but it is predicted that it will score 95+.

Down from $45 /btl to $19.90 in 6 packs

Very little info on both - I suspect that the Mataro is Teusner Righteous Mataro but it is not 100% match.

Shiraz - I have no clue - very little info

Not Teusner, but probably starts with a "T".
