Any thoughts on this one folks?

It is this one https://huttonvale.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Hutton-Vale-Farm-2018-Shiraz-Tasting-note.pdf

From research it should be similar to Mt Edelstone shiraz
:) The vines are from Edelstone vineyard cuttings, made by Kym Teusner. Standish Lamella 2021 is also from Hutton Vale fruit.

So knowledgeable friends, I'm seeing a fair bit of Chateau Yaldara and 1847 Vines on sites like VM and TWC - often to bump up the 'value' of mixed dozens with silly RRPs that seem to be readily slashed when the wines are sold in sixes/dozens ho hum. I saw 1847 in the Halliday monthly mag for the first time this week.

Am I dreaming or are these two recent inventions? The actual 'chateau' in Yaldara's pics looks plenty old. Websites for both seem to lean on local history but often involve a leap - eg, for 1847 Wines the gramps/Orlando story back to 1847 and then it turns out the only link to is one of the vineyards used to be part of that empire.

The chateau and the Yaldara brand were started by a German Immigrant after who come over in one of the POW camps after WW2, called Hermann Thumm, he wrote a book on his life that i read back in the day.

He had family money but also worked hard to establish the Yaldara Brand in the 50's, heavily emulating the French and German wines in the beginning but got famous in Barossa for very cheap sparkling and bulk wines.

Had two sons, whilst he was overseas one day they sold the brand out from under him to first AVL who eventually sold it to a VERY rich Chinese bloke in Sydney who owns shipping ports in china.

He launched the 1847 brand and the Yaldara and 1847 wineries pretty much exclusively made wines for the Chinese market with 90% of stock going to mainland china (1847 has dozens of stores selling the 1847 wine exclusively).

Pricing is purely for optics for very rich Chinese customer, i remember one day he came into the cellardoor and decided a Tawny fortified we sold had to go from $120 to $320 overnight to match the pricing of the Penfolds and Seppelts.

(Hypothetically) Working in the wine industry and having sold wines to VM on various occasions, i can tell you at least 5 wines on the website right now that have been relabeled for the website and the wine in the bottle has a RRP 2-3x the original price.

I had 2018 Grand Pappy Shiraz that I bought via Langtons Staff sale just for fun to try for $35 and despite low expectation, we all were quite impressed with the quality. Later I bid and won 3x2019 First Pick Shiraz bottles for about the same price but yet to try these.

They are also regularly offered at a deep discount at Winestar and JD cellars mailing list.

I can't recommend 2018 Draycott Shiraz high enough. It is available for purchase cheaper on Winestar site here (still available)

I bought more as I thought it is the best Barossa shiraz for that money.
Thanks for the recommendation @olympicwiz :) Normally would leave it down for a few more years but curiosity got the better of me. You were quite right about this one. Terrific.

Thanks for the really interesting explanation, friend. That defo fills in some gaps for me. So Yaldara and 1847 are linked? I couldn't see that from the schmick websites, but there was something eerily similar about the pair of them (not just the silly prices)...

And that must have been no fun to suddenly have to try to sell wine (even ok wine according to Mr Olympic) for 2-3x the price it previously carried. Wowee

It's not uncommon for the exact same thing to have wildly different pricing in China based on the target demographic - some like to be seen to be spending more money than others...

Sorry i should clarify now i'm not coming off a 12-hour night shift (vintage is rough).

It's not so much that the VM sale price is inflated. Here is how people could have worked with VM in the past.

(Hypothetically of course)
We have xx_ wine and want to sell as the next vintage is rolling around but we don't want to hurt our brand or undercut our direct and established sales channels. So we'll pay our graphic designer to whip up a new label (in some case whole brands have been created) to place on the bottle and sell exclusively to VM with some listed on our website for credibility etc.

Now the $28/bottle of Shiraz is rebranded, sold to VM at $8/bottle and sold on VM for $15/bottle with a stated RRP of $69/bottle (we now have this wine on our website and in cd at $69)

It's still a high point scoring wine, from an award-winning winery, and VM customers are still getting it for $15 down from $28...

VM is great and there are some really great wines from great winemakers on there that otherwise wouldn't find a home, just be wary of any wines and brands you're not familiar with and take unverified RRP's with a grain of salt.
