Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

Perth to Adelaide 1725 departure .
I had the roast duck with cabbage and grapes and it was very nice.
Pre departure sparkling offered and accepted and a pre dinner champagne with olives and nuts .
Mum had the chicken and roast cauliflower salad which she said was very nice.
I flew qantas J over for the first time In 4 years and VA is streets ahead in the J class catering. On Qantas I had a shriveled up brown lettuce salad with brown tinged celery , bacon and walnuts. No desert , no cheese just a Lindt ball. No snacks during the flight and juice or water
Before takeoff and no pre dinner drink. Very underwhelming, it was good to see what it’s like over the other side, a good reality check and reminding me VA is streets ahead

VA811 MEL-SYD 05MAR18 A330 J

One of the rare East Coast runs for the 332.

I have to say, for a 1hr 05min flight time, this is probably the best breakfast I have ever had on an Australian airline. The Rat has served far worse/less on transcon services...

Egg, chorizo and bean burrito, a very good muesli (more interesting bits than not), bread roll and croissant.

Quite impressed, although portion was a little small.

VA790 CNS -BNE 9/3 19:55 departure

Pre departure: water, juice or sparkling wine
Choices of : cheese bacon pie or salad.
What actually came out were lamb empanadas. CSM said must have been some mix up as new menu coming (presumably cheese and bacon pie)
Warm breadroll offered soon after. Wine top ups offered quite frequently.

Got to try the new menu yesterday in J travelling on VA679 MEL-PER 09:15 departure, must say the falafel and bacon was a bit out there (maybe I'm just getting old) but is a step up from the old breakfast burrito or bircher muesli (the latter still available). Probably just needed a sauce or relish to stop it being a bit dry. Usual A330 breakfast fare otherwise.

Not sure about all this talk regarding new menus. On both my transcon flights last weekend, it was pretty much the same as I've had the last few years - not that I'm complaining, as I thought it was all great (particularly the mozzarella starter).

From last weekend:

From what I've read online and what the attendant themselves said, the new menu only started mid-last week, so if last weekend is 8 or so days ago rather than 2 or so that may be why.

A very interesting dish on SYD-MEL 1800 departure. While I didn’t catch the name of the dish, it’s basically soft beef with eggplant purée and melted cheese accompanied by oil.

I thought it tasted better than it looked but found it to be quite ‘heavy’ with the oil. I’ll see what another option for tonight’s dinner to MEL is.

P.S sorry about the quality of the photo, annoying sunlight still found its way in around the windscreen shades.

VA685 - Melbourne to Perth, Lunch

This flight had the same crew and plane from my Launceston to Melbourne flight above - they were Perth based and flying home. One of the best crews I've ever seen, extremely friendly etc. Lots of 'welcome backs' from passengers also connecting from Launceston to Perth. Economy passengers from a connecting Hobart flight were puffed out and running after their flight was delayed, and the crew proactively offered to take their bags and offer them water.

Anyway, I had a choice between a breakfast A330 flight or lunch 737 flight. It's a testament to VA catering that I deliberately chose a 737 flight over an A330, solely due to the catering.

Menu:
VA685-Menu.jpg

Entree: Poached chicken salad with egg noodles, coriander and Sichuan sauce.
VA685-Poached-Chicken.jpg

Mains: Pork and mushroom ragu
VA685-Pork-Ragu.jpg

Dessert not pictured, was the chocolate cake.

Everything was excellent - I loved the flavour of the poached chicken salad. Service was impeccable. Still didn't have adequate legroom in Row 1 (bulkhead preventing me from stretching out), so next time I will consider Row 2.

VA470 BNE-PER 18MAR18 332 J Transcon

Same menu as bl5965 above. Different presentation of the main however. 'Apple crumble' for dessert (not on the menu and not what I would call it).

Sparkling as PDB. Revised wine list as noted by Ausbt. I do not know if this is part of the new Luke Mangan menu however.

Very good effort overall and very happy that I have another 10 332 J flights booked for the remainder of the calendar year...

Impressive for a timed 1hour flight gate to gate!

I agree! Most of the time, it's about 45 minutes in the air. We started descent just as I was finishing up the meal.

On a related note, a dinner flight in the opposite direction MEL-LST had an impressive J class hot meal service.

VA1378 - Melbourne to Launceston, Dinner

Braised beef short rib with Parmesan and gnocchi. Very high quality dish.

930am SYD-MEL ... "Snack" .

Pre departure offer of water (still or sparkling), OJ or sparking wine.

Lamb and black bean epanadas with spicy green pea garnish.

Side dish was some sort of fruit granola/muesli over yogurt.

No bread offerred even though butter on dish.

20180319_095609.jpg

It was surprisingly good for a "snack" and made for a pleasant top up after my 6am Breakky on VA2.

Another option was basically fancy chicken sandwiches. I did not see it.

I'm impressed so far, looks like we should be reasonably well looked after for dinner on our way to Adelaide in April. May even have to cash in some points for an upgrade on the way home too :)
