VA685 MEL-PER 19/10/2018 (A332)

The same menu as my outbound flight (this seems to be happening a lot more often the past year - did they not previously have different eastbound/westbound menus?

Cycle rotations change on Wednesday, so seems this particular menu moved down the line on your return, had you flown within that same cycle you’d have received a different menu.

VA677 MEL-PER 29OCT18 332 J Transcon

It is very rare that I will do a breakfast J Transcon flight. Nice but not as substantial as a normal lunch/dinner flight. Croissant with jam not pictured. Not much else they can do however. The Pantry was offered about 90 minutes from arrival.

Always get an amazing meal when a VIP is on board even if they are a prick.

Most food on VA is really good compared to competitors worst in the last few weeks would be the breakfast burrito but I was the only passenger in business and was offered the same as economy.

That's really poor. Only difference I assume is yours was plated?

Have really enjoyed Virgin's J mealtime offerings on many routes, but flying DPS>SYD last week overnight I was disappointed in the offering. The food wasn't poor quality, rather it felt like there wasn't much thought put into the menu.
A small soup was the only choice for 'supper service', and came with a dry piece of cake. Ice cream or sauce would have been very nice (at least the bread roll was great)

Breakfast into Sydney had potential with a nice toasted croissant, however there was no jam available for the pastry. Granola was served with yoghurt, coulis, fresh mint and blueberries (only 3) and a side of additional yoghurt (how much yoghurt do you need?)

Is this a case of Virgin cutting corners on tourist routes or the variability of foreign catering quality? I've seen on domestic routes that VA is able to prepare some lovely meals in the small 737 galley....

Any recent reports from trans-Tasman flights ex-NZ, in business class? Apologies if there's a separate thread on them.

VA470 BNE-PER 11NOV18 B738 J Transcon

Due to our original 332 becoming unserviceable at the gate, it was a very late change to the 738 for this service (we basically took over the aircraft for the later VA474 BNE-PER service) and it also resulted in a three hour delay (about 100 minutes announced and about 80 minutes of VA stuffing around at the gate).

Food was very good as normal but the J service was below the level expected on VA. This was most likely due to a combination of the length of the delay, the aircraft change, the later time, the inherent difference between the J service on the 332 and the 738 and the CSM appeared very flustered about the whole situation. Little things were missing like no hot towels and only The Club member sitting in 2D (and by extension, the pax in 2F) received a pre-dinner drink. It also reaffirmed my decision to avoid the 738 J seat wherever possible.

On the positive side, I was happy I made 'the cut' when they had to 'downsize' J from 20 to 8 (as I was travelling on an award ticket). Some were having to travel the next day.

DPS seems to be consistently lower than the domestic standard, which has improved substantially.

Had a chat to the steward on a recent BNE-DPS J seat about the food quality on the return leg. She explained that it was the local catering company.
Doesn't really stand up to reason given the number of high quality airlines that fly in and out of DPS with premium cabins. Not saying it isn't true, but you know...$$...

Melbourne to Brisbane 16 December 6pm

Some sort of pork dish which wasn’t too bad, just wish the pork had been cut into a few pieces

Not sure why virgin offer cheese and crackers and a bread roll, I thought one or the other would have been enough.

Forgot the wine as I probably drank the whole bottle as only 1 other in J and I don’t think they drank.
