Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

VA1462 DRW-MEL
16:20 departure

The options were chicken with mashed potato and beans (which I had) or gnocchi with a mushroom sauce. Served with cheese & crackers and a small cake - possibly carrot cake with a caramel sauce?

It was good but not particularly exciting (IMHO). I was still a bit hungry later in the flight and the usual pantry snacks were available - biscuits, chocolate bars, red rock deli chips and rice crackers.

This is actually a really decent dish - had the exact same on yesterday's VA1462.

CBR-MEL-CBR today - both flights with the same options, either a) chicken and faro salad or b) pumpkin and risonni salad. Tasty enough but unfortunately repetitive. Cheese/biscuit pack and a heart shaped chocolate. PDB offered and one drink. Flight back was 2 hours late, looks like an earlier delay and flow on, then missed take off slot. Not well communicated though as sat on board for a good 40 mins or so with no explanation.

VA continues to be my 'go-to' local airline these days. On a CNS-MEL flight recently, this was the J class offering. As regular flyers out of MEL know the offering backwards, and it's not changing with any regularity, CM said menu changes are more like every six weeks, and they acknowledge the work that needs to be done to 'spruce' things up.

VA1348 - SDT 0050
FT: 4:40 DRW-SYD - 2A
Time for another red-eye yay. Only water was offered as PDB, was very much appreciated as way to hot and humid in DRW. We took off on time and the CSM came bounding out. Meal orders taken 2A/C - 2D/F - 1A/C - 1D/F. The order sheet had both me and my neighbour circled on the sheet and I believe 2F was crew so that might explain the order. Two options, vegetarian macaroni or Thai green chicken curry. Opted for the latter. It was delicious and the basil was lovely and fresh even for a double catered flight, it wasn’t very spicy but the chilli’s on top were which caught a few out. Came with cheese and crackers and a chocolate cake which was very nice and not too sweet. Bottles of water were then handed out and lights off and crew all went down the back. Slept for the rest of the flight and was only woken up by the wheels hitting the ground so not bad overall. Landed at 0620 and disembark at 0630 a full half hour ahead of schedule.

MEL - NTL
No photos as both options have been featured in this thread. Peri Peri Chicken Burger or Pumpkin and Risoni Salad.
Service was slow. It took a long time for the orders to be taken and then for the meals to appear. After that the cabin manager wasn't seen again. No drink top ups offered. Trays cleared only on descent.

Dinner on my flight from SYD to MEL last Thursday was the chicken with mash and green beans or the gnocchi with creamy mushroom sauce.

Haven't tried either dish but I went with the chicken as I had the tofu salad and vegetarian frittata in the lounge already and I was happy to say the dish tasted great.

Had a passable chardonnay to go with the meal. PDB of sparkling wine or water was offered and dinner orders were taken on the ground from 1A to 1F and 2A to 2F.

Service was very good as the crew stopped the boarding process when the CSM offered PDBs and took dinner orders which was a first for me.

No complaints on the taste of the food but I believe meals presentation is still fairly inconsistent across the board.

Had the same meal as Matt last week and the presentation of it could be better as there were more sauce on mine (which is not bad as it went well with the mash) and both my chicken and mash looked more a slop.

Same options on my CBR-MEL last week. Selected the chicken but the pumpkin also looked good.

Am about to travel MEL DPS VA J on Monday. Wondering if anyone has done an AU to DPS J flight on VA recently, and what was the meal service like? I’m assuming it would be exactly the same as any domestic or trans-con, i.e. not much? Any thoughts appreciated. I think we’ll have to end up taking some snacks I guess.

How'd your flight go? I'm on SYD-DPS tonight and wondering whether to eat before the flight. Also I assume there's still no VAi lounge access for business/elites - any vouchers? I can access the rather tiny Plaza Premium in Sydney but expect it to be jam packed given the Amex lounge is closed for renos and redirecting guests to PP.

Would appreciate feedback on the catering and service flow on your trip - will be travelling VA to Fiji next year and imagine it will be similar.

If you have a look at transcon flights in this thread then it will be exactly the same tray setup for SHI.

If you're one to get hungry easily then would recommend eating before if you have lounge access or having snacks with you.

PeriPeri chicken burger both ways, was great, but could do with a lettuce leaf or tomato or something, it's just chicken piece, sauce & bun.

Was fine enjoyed it.

Also on offer the rissoni, pumpkin dish, Mrs Mootime had it which was she said was great n tasty.

Sorry no photo's, took one but no good.
