Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

Flew J Syd-Per last week. My main dinner meal of Roast Pork Belly with Crackle was obscenly (sic?) nice. Like ridiculously good. On XFA so a few things not up to scratch. Really miss XFC-E!

Current menu - Peking Duck for start was also outstanding...... however the Pork was probably the best meal I've had on DJ - beats even the Duck from a few cycles ago.

You'll probably get a $250 credit. I find the complaints department very proactive.

I got 50 bucks for no loaded J food at the start of the year. Honestly, they could have refunded my points and kept the money and I'd have been happier. Still haven't used the credit as I keep forgetting its there and it will probably expire before I remember.

On the subject of, I'm just at The Lounge and have swapped my evening flight to a lunchtime one that leaves in about 2 hours. Apparently, DJ need 4 hours notice to load catering so my J flight will be food-free (shame, I've been looking forward to trying something new). Looking online, I'm the only person travelling in J. I can understand the need to save on food... but one of the benefits of travelling J is the ability to move your flight, it would be nice if they could give catering a go. Based on current loads, there will be 0 J food loaded onto the plane. I'd have thought it would make sense to load 1 or 2 spares on each flight.

Probably very tight with costing and waste. Loading 1~2 J for zero load at T-4h would be a gamble until business class business picks up.
Their theory in your situation is most likely "you can have a feed in the lounge, and still raid the Y menu onboard at no charge".

Its still not the point though is it. The premium they are charging over y more than compensates for some wastage. I mean what would a j meal cost them? A couple of bucks at most, and if its not used im sure the crew would would eat it

Absolutely. If not the crew, some hungry WP etc. Most likely this is decided by the accountants and not customer service. (No offence to the accountants!).

Sounds like a LCC mentality to me!

Have to agree with MarkD on this one... J is is J. If they provide the seat they should provide the service.

Perhaps they should allow staff travel in J like QF does, so that it can be assured there's always someone there to eat the J meal?

What. Have you never had a flight change on Qantas and had 'Meal not assured' on your BP :?:

I agree that 4 hrs is a bit over the top but DJ are not alone on this one.

Except they do around 350 flights a day.
At 350 flights a day by two meals by (approx) $10 per meal the cost factor is now $1.25M pa.

It's one of the reasons they have kept their CASK down so low considering the transition. Good for shareholders, bad for customers.

VA really needs to pick up their game. It is really disappointing. I flew QF in J today and the snack was miles ahead of what DJ offer! I have been thinking and to compete with QF I think that DJ should do a VX type meal service in J.

Printed Menu?

First Flight till 10am:

Breakfast

10am till Last Flight:

Lunch/Dinner combined.

Get rid of the chocolate nuts.

Every meal should have a main (aka dog tray) as well as a salad, desert (cakish thing) and bakery item. That would show up QF.

You could say that by not over-catering, they are saving some cash, but by the same argument we could go onto say they'd also save money by not providing newspapers to J pax, not providing tea and coffee to Y pax etc etc... until we're back at being a LCC again. People pay a big premium for a J fare and while food/drink are one of the benefits, one of the other benefits is the ability to change your plans during the day and take an earlier flight. As far as I'm concerned, that shouldn't impact on the rest of the product.

I know Qantas say they can't guarantee catering under some circumstances (which is usually if you jump on a flight that's about to board), I still know that they always over-cater the J cabin so you'll get something (just maybe not the first choice).

It may vary with routes but on the SYD-OOL route I've moved to an earlier flight about 5 times since the launch of J and although I've been advised that there may not be catering, there always has been.
