I still think VA's presentation is better.

I am off to LAX in J with VA on Sunday. Has anyone recently done this flight, the menu on the VA WEBSITE looks good but it has not changed for a while. Any photo's or ideas when they do actually change it?

I did MEL-LAX last week and can tell you that the menu on the website is not the current one (unless it's changed in the last six days). I don't recall what was on the menu but nothing blew me away. In fact I was pretty underwhelmed with the whole experience.

Care to share why you were underwhelmed ?

The website says June 2013, it would be great to have comment from VFF (can someone please tag) and get their comments on what the current menu is and provide an update to the VA website.

I had the prawn fettuccine recently. Not an easy dish to eat - pasta was overcooked so it fell apart when trying to twist it - basically gave up as it was too hard.

Had a duck and beef pie with broadbeans and tarragon 2 days later.

Both on the MEL- SYD route.

Pleased to report it was butter in rounds and not the packet Lurpak.

Dessert was a couple of a salted toffee almond covered in chocolate.

The mocktail works perfectly with vodka too.

It was my first time on the 777 and from everything I'd read beforehand the consensus was that the hard product is dated, but the service makes up for it however I found the service to be hit-and-miss. Priority boarding at MEL was non-existent (in fact I'd say boarding was a shambles), and while I was greeted when boarding there was no intro from the FA working my side of row 5. Once in the air the service wasn't as attentive as I would have expected. As an example, I had to continually ask for my water to be refilled, even though given I was drinking the hard stuff I would think it would be obvious I'd like a steady supply of water.

J was full, and given there were approx 10 empty seats up until an around an hour before departure I can only assume these were filled with op-ups and staff travel. What I found unusual was that two young children were seated opposite me in row 5 while their parents were seated in the main cabin.

As I said, I've not flown VA J long haul before so perhaps my expectations were just too high.

I just checked and the current menu came out on 1SEP. We're about to take off but if I remember to take it home I'll scan and upload it.

Hey DGW, did you get a chance to update this? curious to know what the current menu is.

My apologies, but I completely forgot to chuck it in my bag. I did however manage to take a blurry pic of the Australia to LA page; if you view it full size and squint it's mostly readable. Better than nothing I guess.

J Cabin was 7/8 so Zoe (CS) was busy throughout. Two options available - I chose the Leek and Onion tart as I hadn't tried it previously (haven't been in J for a while).

Great use of one of my 4 Comp Upgrades - considering the Flexi fare was only $210, seemed a no brainer.

I Just completed the VA7/8 rotation in J and I will say I was very impressed with the quality of the meals that I received, as was the person in 5C. One the BNE - LAX i had the Thai Chicken Noodle Soup, that was very nice. I then had the Lamb Cutlets. While not pink they were still very tender and juicy and worked will with the Shiraz. I then had the Ice Cream and a Cheese Plate. The Shiraz was great and washed it all down with some scotch! Very Nice. Breakfast before landing was a Fruit bowl and smoothie along with a Croissant. I picked a Bacon, Caramelised Onion and Spinach Muffin and it was presented well and tasted great!

The LAX to BNE leg, well the food here was as good. I had a Cold Lamb Salad with Chick Peas and a salsa, main was a beef fillet which was cooked very will and again the cheese, a flourless cake and some scotch and wine.... I then had 8 1/2 hours sleep work right at breakfast and I had the same start options but the main was a omelette which I would say was the weakest of the meals... still nice though.... A proper coffee as well....

Bugger the rolls, hand over the ice cream, especially if it was the hokey pokey one, I'm getting sick of orange cake!

The ice cream was awesome. I don't remember it's name but it had chocolate brownie and chocolate sauce mixed through it.

Dinner options were Rigatoni (with some basil pesto and tomato based sauce) and Malaysian Chicken Curry.
Wife had the pasta and thought it was good, too much parmesan for me though.
I had the chicken (along with most of the J PAX, full cabin) which was GREAT. Big chunk of chicken on the bone, crusted in curry, served on rice. I don't think I've ever had a domestic airline meal where the chicken was this good. So if you have the choice, go for that.
Meal came with bread roll, fresh salad and those little hazelnuts in chocolate for sweets.

Had some nuts to nibble later and was pleased to find lots of macadamias in the mix.

VA281 ADL/MEL 8 Nov

Two choices - Bacon & Egg Roll and a Frittata with corn, with accompanying organic yogurt with mango.

I chose the latter. Good option, tasty and filling - only negative was the frittata was too moist. Yogurt beautiful.
