Virgin Australia Discover Gold (Status Match)

I hope that research helps you maintain or improve the specific skills or knowledge you need to perform your current employment activities...

Fear not, Mr Chalmers! Retired and self funded . ( I did, however claim pro-rata deductions in 2017 when, on a DONE4, I manged to squeeze in side trips to Bermuda and Jamaica for some research.📚🎓 🍸 )

1 sector and just 80SC’s within those 3 months to retain Gold for a further 12 months or 2 sectors and 200SC’s within the 3 months to get Platinum for 12 months.
Pretty good offer IMO if you are thinking of trying them out. Effectively you can get Platinum for around $700
Do tell? $700 for 200 SC?

Recently did CBR-MEL-ADL in J and price was $386 but with promo code it came to $353 and earnt 110SC’s. Regularly see fares like that ex ADL too so a return trip would be $706 for 220SC’s. Flexibility often the key but that would get you Platinum under the promo

Status has updated to Gold in the last 30 mins or so.

Applied 12:02PM [AEST] 13-Sep
Approved 5:55PM 13-Sep
Status Upgraded ~2:00PM 14-Sep

Review date is 14 Dec 2022, and status is good to 14 Jan 2023

Now I just need to find a cheap and easy 200SCs, and a good excuse for the mrs as to why I should spend money at all on it! :D

Cheers,
Matt.
Hi dairyfloss,
I see above that your status is good till 14th Jan. And I assume that is without you earning the 200SC? I have a United flight I need to book for Jan, but I thought if I applied now, then the match would have finished by end Dec??

Yes, Gold status is only for three months. You might like to wait until late October to put in your application. Just note that there is no published end date for this promotion, so it could be withdrawn at any time. However, it has to suit your needs to be of any use.

I think Velocity has a 1 month grace period if you don't manage to renew your status, and the first month of earn in your new year can be backdated to allow for this. BA has something similar

However, I suspect anything earned in the grace period won't count towards the goal for Discover Gold.

I have the same review date, where does the 14 Jan 2023 date come from? I don't see any reference to it on my account.

  • Review Date: the last day of your Benefit Period."

Maybe I worded my post incorrectly. What I meant was where does it indicate status is good until Jan 2023 (I'm assuming status is good means benefits are still active).

Ah. I suppose it doesn't state that explicitly, but I can't think of any other meaning for the card expiry date... Also, I think there's been mentions on this forum that VFF usually has a 1 month grace period, which seems to line up with this, but maybe a more seasoned VFF flier here can chime in.

I'm QF platinum and have just been matched to Velocity Gold...
Can anyone confirm that I will still be lifted to Platinum if I meet the 2 sectors & 200 s/c...I have already booked flights during the correct 3 month period in anticipation of Platinum...thank you

That's the way the promotion is worded.

Yes - this is how I saw it. Qualify by the 14th Dec 2022 to retain or upgrade, else your status and Gold card will expire Jan 14th 2023. In fact, in my Apple Wallet, the digital card ONLY shows the card expiry date of 14 Jan 2023, which I suspect is to make it easier when flashing the card at eligible locations. See below:

I have carefully read through Velocity’s information but cannot see much benefit for me becoming Platinum. If you do need four reward seats each quarter, then go for it. There is no difference to lounge entry or partner lounge entry between Gold and Platinum. I am going to change next month’s Qatar flights to my Velocity number and will earn lots of SCs and points, but the flights are not “eligible sectors” as not on VA metal. I’ll earn enough points for a couple of reward flights though. I have booked the one segment to activate Gold for 12 months.
I think I’ll have to ask some questions on the VA threads.

There's a couple of "nice to have" benefits of VA WP over Gold. Off the top of my head:
* Additional lounge guest allowance flying domestic (3 adults vs 1 adult)
* Free economy X seating for yourself + everyone else on the booking
* Fly Ahead on Choice fares

Never thought of the reward seats or J upgrades as particularly useful. The J upgrades have to be from Economy Flex and often it's only marginally more to just buy J outright (and get the points and SCs); sometimes J is cheaper than Economy Flex. They could be useful if your employer is paying for travel and has a Y-only policy though.

The other "benefit" of getting to WP is that it locks in a minimum of 2 years of lounge access regardless of your future flying activity because if you don't requalify you'll soft land back to Gold after 12 months.

Just got rejected for the status match.. the only item in the generic email sent across that applies to me is:
"Holding membership in a loyalty program of an airline that partners with Velocity frequent flyer. "

I do technically hold one with Etihad, but no status at all. I was matching from a QF WP status.. have I missed something basic here? it's not like i'm trying to status match from an Ethihad FF program

Thanks for the information. Most of the extra benefits don’t interest me as I mostly fly solo anyway. The soft landing extra year is worthwhile if I fly SQ in economy though.
