Virgin Australia Discover Gold (Status Match)

Agreed. I also applied last Monday and have so far heard nothing. I need to book a flight soon and my business will go to QF if they can't get their act together.

I'm not even sure why I'm bothering at this point. The VA lounge is still closed at my home airport, their service in general lately has been woeful, and once international travel resumes it seems Velocity status is going to be even more useless than before.
Do you honestly think that when international travel even has a sniff of reopening Virgin won't have announced their international partners?
Do you think that's a real possibility? Really?
Airlines will be falling over themselves to gain any sort of revenue.

Let's be serious some posters here applying velocity gold cos they just want something for free & then only to bag & criticize everything about it.
Why some ppl put themselves thru this I have no idea.

If you applied and got approval on the same day I guess they are prioritising applications by start date.
Or the scenario, and just suggesting not to many QF P1, WP or SG are keen to take up the VA offer/ challenge.

I finally got an email from Velocity this morning advising that the status match is approved.

Yes, I suppose this makes me a hypocrit. I'll accept that.

I have nothing to lose by applying for the match, so thought I would give Virgin another go. But when they don't even get back to you in the time they said they would, it's not a great first impression.

They did finally get back to me today, and yes, I'm sure we will find out later which international partners they retain and what their new domestic product looks like. I'm happy to keep my post-covid options open so I'll fly the required 80 SCs and give them a chance.

Just got my approval also. Applied on 8 Dec, nominated start date 28 Dec.
Just got my approval thru today: 10 days after applying, but that's cool ... my guess is that they got a much bigger response than expected.

Looking forward to giving Virgin another try. They were initially my airline of choice, but about 5 years ago (after 3 years of gold status) I was refused lounge entry by an incompetent lounge dragon who claimed my gold card had expired (it hadn't, and the actual expiry date was clearly shown on it). In a petulant fit I switched loyalty to Qantas. I think after 5 years I can find it in my heart to forgive them, LOL.

Start date ... 28 December

Lordie No, I just voted with my feet (and wallet). Besides which, my limited and few experiences of complaining against large corporations have always proved pointless.

There are two ways to win a tennis match.
1. Outplay your opponent, your skill wins the match.
2. Let your competitor make errors, your skill wins the match.

Virgin is making an unforced error, but they won't see it till the set is lost.

Phones are off the hook for this one. Virgin is 3-steps behind.
Whilst I agree it seems to me that Qantas is in a race to the bottom with them with all their cuts etc. Not good for any of us.

I've not flown VA for almost a decade and am interested in this.
There's one part that's not too clear (to me at least):
It says you nominate when your 3 month period starts and if you meet the 80SC/1 segment requirement, you get another 12 months of gold status.
Does that mean your status year cycle will change to align with the end of the 3 month period?
I logged in and am Red and couldn't even find when my year ends - maybe they don't publish it for those with the lowest status level?

I'm in a similar situation , but 5 years, not 10!
If I recall right, unlike Qantas (where your status reset date is fixed for ever), I seem to remember that with Virgin it is on a "rolling cycle" and gets reset whenever you jump up a tier.

Could be wrong about this, but someone can maybe confirm ...

That sort of stuff can do your head in, if not careful. 😉

Yes, at the end of the 3 month period, your status year as Gold will expire one year from that date

Red doesn't have an end of year as such. Every night, they check whether you have attained Silver or not based on the past 365 days.
