Virgin Australia flights to Doha now on sale

Also can someone please confirm - if I buy SYD - EU economy choice flights and I am plat va, I can now then request to upgrade those to business? Does anyone know how long that process takes (is it till the last moment or what, etc) ? How likely do you think those upgrades are to go through as well? I guess since these are new flights it's hard to say.

Anyone have an answer on the best program to use when travelling on these QR for VA flights?
I'm VA and QF Gold.
From what I can gather:
QF gold gets me seat selection on QR (for onward flights only) but not on VA.
VA gets me a $20 in Doha
I'm guessing both gives me lounge access across the network (Aus/Doha/Europe)
Thanks
Correct me if I'm wrong but as these are VA flights (on wetleased Qatar planes), QF Gold status will be worthless on those flights?

To take advantage of of QF Gold status you need to be flying on a flight with a QR flight number?

Or if you book a VA flight on its QR codeshare will they (ironically!) honour QF Gold status even though it's a VA flight?

(This kind of gets your head in, doesn't it!!)

You can only upgrade the VA legs but unsure of other factors

Correct.

They're "technically" not Oneworld flights, but VA "flights" using QR aircraft and crew using the Velocity callsigns on the ATC as well as mentioning Virgin in the in-cabin announcements. Thus Oneworld benefits do not apply on the VA wetlease flights, so expect zero lounge access from any Oneworld carrier's status.

They only started selling tickets for these new flights just a few months ago, and since they did I have been checking all the time, and never saw any reward seats.

There have been many conversations on these very forums about the new qatar/va flights and when they will put them in the reward system, I've never seen anyone say that they saw any.

There was the reward flights to Doha only a month or two ago, but again not all the time to Europe.

AFF released an article about this on the day the seats were released. On 21 January, many flights had 4x J seats available.

What do you mean VA legs? I am talking about the codeshare flights operated by QR. Do you mean the flights with VA callsign?

That's literally what I said - to Doha only (ie. not also onwards to Europe).

Correct.

While very unlikely, there’s nothing stopping QR/VA from recognising oneworld status if they wanted to.

It will be interesting to see the load differentials between the flights, as the true QR ones should be oneworld heavy, VA light, and for the VA flights there will probably be next to no oneworld pax travelling.

And say you’re a QF or BA member booked on QR which gets cancelled, they move you to the VA flight. That’s going to be a world of hurt.

Did a Google search and found this page: Virgin Australia Doha Flights

From what I can deduce, the upgrade process is instant if there is availability at the time you request it. You can call to request an upgrade at any time up to 24 hours before departure. Note that there is no way currently to request an upgrade except to call Velocity, which is odd as the note on the page says that a fee may apply (seems odd to charge people to do something that can't be otherwise achieved without a fee); I'm guessing that Platinum and Platinum Plus not only get a special number they can call but there is no fee.

What determines if there is upgrade availability? No idea. An old rule of thumb (I think worked on VA and QF domestic) is that if there is Reward availability, it's more than likely also upgrade availability.

If there is no upgrade availability at the time you request it, you can be asked to be placed on a waitlist. The page doesn't say when waitlists will be processed, i.e. is it as soon as (new) availability arises, or only at some arbitrary time before departure (7 days, 3 days, 24 hours, don't know). What is interesting to note is that upgrade priority on the waitlist is fare type first followed by Velocity status. That is, all Flex fares get processed first (Platinum Plus followed by Platinum, etc.), then Choice fares next. So technically a Red purchasing a Flex fare has a higher waitlist priority than a Platinum purchasing a Choice fare.

I assume this page will be updated (or assimilated into existing pages) for Platinum Plus, because it's still written as if Platinum is the highest status available (and you'd still think Platinum Plus will or should have an extra edge on Platinum members).

Yes, the VA flights from Australia to Doha.
You won’t be able to upgrade the Doha to Europe legs

If I recall correctly there were some on here including myself that found some decent availability back in Feb when they first went live.
I remember there being some interesting routes including to the US that could be booked at the time

But then you'd probably just book the reward directly, no?
It obviously depends on points cost to upgrade which I haven’t seen anywhere yet but not everyone is blessed with large points tallies and they might think it’s worthwhile. I guess there would be plenty of reasons and I’ve done similar with other airlines in the past when it made sense

Interesting, thanks - didn't know about this page. By the sounds of it, given there are no reward availability, it doesn't seem all too likely.

I should make it clear that I didn't know the page existed - Google helped me find it. And I did link the page and I'm simply giving my interpretation of it, because as you can see, it seems we haven't got down to the bottom of some of these things.

My guess is that the usual media - AFF included - will scramble in the coming days or weeks to seek clarification on these.

That said, I only assume that if you call and there is availability for upgrade, it is processed immediately. That's how I read what it says on the linked page, because otherwise why bother talking about a waitlist separately if everyone would need to wait.

The costs for upgrading appear to be on the page as well:
  • Economy Flex to Business: 69,000 points
  • Economy Choice to Business (Gold and Platinum only): 99,000 points
  • For reference, Economy Reward is 56,000 points and Business Reward is 119,500 points (from all Australia to DOH, except for PER, which is 42,000 and 89,500 points respectively), plus of course taxes and carrier surcharge of USD 100 for Economy and USD 200 for Business (if booked or amended on or after 1 May)
As a Platinum, for upgrading you're gambling between fronting up 119,500 points (sorry Perth, we won't assume you for now) and USD 200 and you get a Business seat straight away - assuming the availability exists already (and you can clearly see it online) - versus a Choice fare and 99,000 points (so the fare "replaces" 20,500 points) or a Flex fare and 69,000 points (fare "replaces" 50,500 points), that you don't necessarily know immediately will turn into a Business seat. Don't forget that if you buy the fare and upgrade, you still earn points and status credits based on your original fares. As a rough guide, a Platinum flying one-way on Economy Flex to DOH would earn about 15k points (except from PER); half that if on Economy Choice.

It would seem the case that if there are few (or no) Reward seats in Business, then upgrades straight away would be unlikely, but this is just a guess (mainly based on a heuristic and experience on other carriers). For all we know, there may be special space available for Platinum (hey, maybe Platinum Plus may have the benefit that they can upgrade or book Reward seats into regular revenue space), or upgrade inventory may just be separate altogether.

Choice is the lowest fare type available on Middle East services. So any Gold or Platinum who isn't booking a Business Reward and is fully intending to fly on a VA wet lease service anyway has nothing to lose by calling for an upgrade as soon as their fare is booked; after all, if you still want a chance to upgrade, you have to go on the waitlist. Otherwise, have a look at the Reward availability on the day and flight you want to book (even better, see if you can use ExpertFlyer or the like to see the inventory). If there's no Business Reward seats and/or the Business buckets are looking a bit thin, instant upgrade chances are likely reduced.

It’s very confusing!
I have booked BNE-DOH with a QR flight number with onward travel with QR and BA. I added my one world membership and was able to choose seats on QR and BA but not the VA leg. I’m hesitant to change to my VA FF in case it undoes those selections and ruins my lounge chances for the trip.

I might be reading it wrong but unless you are in J you would have no lounge access in BNE on these VA flights if you have your QFF number entered

Can I ask someone who has booked via Aeroplan. does your Aeroplan number show up in the Aeroplan bookings on their website (this will be at the bottom of the screen where it has your seats etc. On all my other Aeroplan booking with Swiss TK etc it does, and on this one which is a combination of VA (operated by QR) and Turkish, it does not. Might be a red flag and of course cannot access booking through either TK or VA website Thanks

I have another question, I've tried to A/B test a few times now both on the phone and computer, and there is actually no difference in prices between using the "VAI25" code or not using it.

Is it actually not working or does it not apply to all routes or something? I am looking to book SYD - AMS for example.
